This post is just for fun–I’m not trying to say that a diamond or a moissanite is superior. They are both different. We decided to switch my clarity enhanced diamond with an Amora moissanite because the clarity of my diamond was driving me crazy. It looks beautiful from straight on, but I could see the inclusions from an angle. The moissanite just seemed like a good option for me since I didn’t want to compromise on size, and we can’t afford a great quality diamond right now. Here are pics for those of you who have been curious to see side by side pictures to compare. If you’re considering a moissanite, I would say to order one just to check it out. I got mine in two days, thought about it for two days, and decided to have it set. We’re going to sell my diamond, and use the extra money toward getting awesome bands. I want a diamond eternity band (I think).
The diamond is the loose stone, and the Amora moissanite is in the setting. The cut is a little different, and I prefer the cut of the diamond when I look really closely. I think they look very similar here under the warm light of my bedroom lamp. At the jewelers, the moissanite sparkled much more than the diamond, but the diamond is a J color and I2 clarity. I could definitely see the difference in the color of the stones at the jeweler, and in my car with the overhead light on. Here I think they look so similar though.

thanks for the pics! could you describe the difference of the cut? I really can’t see it at all. ): I keep hearing moissy is cut differently, but I just don’t see it! blrrrg.

@patchy: I’ve read that diamonds are cut to maximize the weight. Moissanite, on the other hand, is cut to maximize the overall beauty. I dont know of any other cut difference. Maybe this is what you’re talking about?

Nice pictures!! Amora wins in terms of clarity and color!! Amora cuts are flatter on top. As you can see from the picture, moissanite have larger surface (table) and lesser crown (the slope thingy that leads to the sharp end of the gem). Amora gem will have the same cut as diamond and hopefully we will be able to buy them in spring 2012. I am now a true moissanite convert.

Yes, the round brilliant cut in moissanite isn’t the greatest, but it looks very pretty in your ring. I can’t wait for the H&A cut to debut.

Very pretty! I have to say, I prefer the Amore more than the diamond!

I don’t know enough about diamonds to be able to explain the cut. They just look a little different to me. 🙂 The sparkle of the moissanite makes up for its cut, though. Under the jeweler’s lighting the fire is incredible. Also, in natural sunlight it looks awesome, very similar to a diamond.

gorgeous!!! thanks for sharing. I’ve been thinking about getting an amora moissy as well. Just wondering what size amora did you get? And what size ring do you wear? I am trying to figure out the right size amora for my finger. thanks.
oh, and by the way, if you have some pictures of your amora moissy and diamond together in different lighting, like sunny, cloudy day, etc, would you PLEASE post those if you have time. I would loooooove to see the difference in lighting between the two. thanks again.

@Chay: The moissy is 1.25 carats, and my ring size is 6. I live in Oregon, so everyday is cloudy this season! 🙂 But, I will tell you that I think the stones look identical in cloudy weather. As for sunny, I just took a trip to San Diego for Christmas, and my moissy was SUPER sparkly in the sun. I didn’t have the diamond with me, but I would say the moissy was slightly more sparkly because of the double refraction thing.

I’m in love! I don’t have a super need to have a 1carat or higher ring but my dear SO does! lol. we discovered moissys from the BEE and I had to join and get in on the conversation. I am so so in love with the moissanite! To me… i know there is a stigma and all of that, but they really are beautiful in their own right. I created a cart with like 5 rings on moco.com and told him just choose one that you love bc i love them all.
it’s a great “alternative” and completely affordable and reasonable for our lifestyle. we simply don’t have the means to spend 5-10k, we can spend 1-2k to get the same “look” And all that matters is how it feels to YOU and how much YOU love it. but your new moissy is just gorgeous! 🙂
