What would you spend on a bridal shower gift for soon-to-be close family relative?
My husband’s brother is getting married. I am not attending the bridal shower (too far away). Her registry is generally $100-$250, with one item remaining at $20 and two under $50 that are already purchased. I had planned to spend $50 (which is at the higher range of what people spent for me – $25-$50), but a friend of mine tells me I need to buy at least a $100 present because she clearly expects it given her limited, but expensive registry and we have a long relationship ahead of us. I am hopeful that instead maybe she just hasn’t finished adding to the registry or she expects her friends will go in on gifts together.
As a side note, I can’t really simply reciprocate exactly what she did for me. She probably sent me gifts about $75 for my shower gifts (one registry, one thoughtful off registry item)….but she & Brother-In-Law never gave us a wedding gift (or, repaid us for the BIL’s suit for the wedding as agreed beforehand, but I digress). Even though they never gave one, I don’t intend to not give a wedding gift, and in fact, our wedding gift to them is personalized and decided already. [Edited to remove details in case she’s on the bee.] I also planned to have her girls give her some champagne from me for her out-of-country bachelorette (~$100) which I am not able to attend. She & Brother-In-Law also make quite a bit more than us, if it matters, so I am finding difficult to spend an amount she might expect, when we are fairly careful in our daily life with our spending.
