- Wedding: April 2016 - Ed Oliver Golf Club, Wilmington, DE
I have been absent from the bee for the last week because we found out some pretty devasting news at our anatomy scan last Thursday. We had a late afternoon appointment and by 8am on Friday, we were already meeting with specialists from CHOP.
We found out our baby girl (she’s a girl!!) has 4 different heart defects and also that her stomach is on the wrong side of her body. She will need open heart surgery at birth and then 2 follow up open hearts (one at 4 months or so, and one at 2-4 years). We are so fortunate to live in the Philadelphia area and CHOP is literally a 20 minute drive from us. I will deliver there in March, so that they are able to have the cardiologists and surgery team ready to go. They already have a first surgery plan for her, and I will be continuing all future prenatal care at CHOP so they are able to closely monitor her condition.
We have to focus on the positives; these surgeries are so much more advanced now, with higher success rates. She is already so incredibly loved. I am fortunate that I will be able to leave work for the probably the year I will need. I am fortunate that my husband’s company has good health insurance. It is just so difficult to know that I can’t help my baby, and that she is going to need these surgeries so early in her life. We both have large families that all live locally and are already being so helpful and supportive.
Our daughter, Lucy, is going to be born to some of the most loving people out there. We just need everyone’s prayers and positive thoughts that everything works the best it can.

MsCandyGirl : oh bee I’m so sorry! I can’t even imagine how difficult this is for you and yoUr SO. My thoughts and prayers will be with Lucy. CHOP is amazing and it sounds like you will be in excellent hands. CHOP saved my life by treating me with brain cancer when I was 12, and also my brother who was born with blindness and defects and requires a shunt. Wishing all the best for you, your family, and your little girl. *hugs*
