We use Angies list and I love it. We signed up when we were house hunting a few months ago and have used to find an inspector, attorney, doctor review, car repair, etc. In my opinion its worth the membership fee – plus they run deals (like groupon) on many highly rated services.

My husband and I have used it, for our movers, and exterior house painting, and my mother used it to have her tile installed. To be honest, none of us had any luck with it. Even though they all got good reviews, their work was all sub-par.  Maybe it was just bad luck on our part, however, and you’ll have better luck!  We’ve had much better success asking our friends and other home owners.

Also, consider seeing if the company you want to hire has a FB page, people will post anything, good or bad, on those sites. Seem to be a bit more useful to me anyways..

Good luck and congrats on the new house!!

@lovekiss:  Hi, Neighbor! When my husband and I bought our house last year, one of the first things he did was sign up for Angies list for the very same reason you did. We had to have our chimney repaired, had to have landscaping done, and plumbing needed to be addressed. Never having owned a home before, good reviews was definitely important to us. We have not had ONE complaint about Angie’s list, and the people we’ve used because of it have been a dream to work with. I’d do it!

Oh, AND!!!! When I needed a new Gyn, guess where I went to choose a new doctor? If you said Angie’s List, you’d be correct. So happy with it too.

We have a membership but I find that I use recs from friends and neighbors more than anything else.
