Different.  Invites are official, date time, place , couple, official wording, etc.  Save the dates are sent out before the invites, usually saying "Save the Date! John & Jane are getting married on January 19th 2008. (Usually in small letters it says) Invitation to follow. Sometimes has a pic of the couple or a decoration Usually on a magnet…something people can put on there fridge or a postcard.

i believe announcements are sent immediately AFTER the wedding to those who weren’t invited.

The STD is nice if you have chosen a time of year (like Thanksgiving or spring break) when people might have other plans if you wait too long to tell them, or conversely if people need to start more than 6 weeks early to plan to come to your wedding (for instance if you have a destination wedding, or live in a town where the hotels fill up at certain times of year).  Sometimes you include hotel information with the Save-The-Date Cards.

Piperbenjamin is right; the announcement is sent after.  For instance if you had a really small wedding, but want to let a number of people who you couldn’t invite know that you are actually married.

It is more complicated that you would think, isn’t it?  I have learned a lot in the past month since I started invitation shopping!
