I was wondering if anyone announced their engagement in their hometown newspapers? SO and I live in a different state now, but I know that everyone in his hometown still reads the “weddings/engagements/deaths” section of the newspaper.
When do you put up the engagement announcement? Immediately? Or closer to the wedding date? Do you put the proposal pictures in the paper or your official engagement photos?

We announced it in our local newspaper. We were engaged in June, our announcement was in the paper about a month ago and our wedding isnt until October 2011. The papers in my area will only print a posed picture of the couple so we used our engagement photo. Some people choose to not have a picture but most of the announcements that I have seen include pictures.

Is this an outdated custom?

Mine is going in this week and we are getting married in two weeks.
A friend of mine had hers in the paper about 9 months before the wedding. Many people have it in the paper after the wedding.
Really depends what you want.

we aren’t going to run our announcement until after the wedding.
we’re both from the same town and between his family and mine, there are far too many people that know us and/or our parents/grandparents. i don’t want anybody to deal with the “i saw the announcement that junior is getting married next week, we’d love to come!” phone calls that may result of pre-wedding announcements, lol.

We’ll put ours in about a month or so before the big day, or a bridal photo from the ceremony a few weeks after as a wedding announcement. I agree with NYE gal, it sort of just depends on what you want (and when you get around to it, hehe).

We put in an engagement annoucment fairly soon after our engagement and will put in a wedding annoucement after we having our wedding pictures back. Our engagement annoucement featured a picture that was taken the night of our engagement rather than one of our “engagement pictures” that were taken about 6 months later.

@PinkMagnolia: Are newspapers still around?! lol j/k
No. We didn’t submit it.

We are choosing to do a wedding announcement as opposed to an engagement announcement for the same reasons as future.mrs.v. We are having a REALLY small wedding and we don’t want to be out in the position of having people calling asking for invites….or even worse, assuming they can just show up.

Ours was just in about 2 weeks ago. The way I look at it is, its an engagement announcement…the whole point is to announce that you just got engaged…not “hey!! we’re getting married next week!” All my friends have commented on it saying how nice it was that we put it in this early, not a week or so before our wedding.

Mr Hot Wing’s parents did an engagement announcement in their hometown using our epic. A friend of my parent’s put a congratulations ad in the Vietnamese newspaper announcing our wedding in my hometown.

Absolutely not an outdated custom in South Carolina (and imagine the same with the rest of the South). We will have our engagement announcement in some local papers, and I think 4-6 months prior to the wedding is pretty normal. I plan to send out the Save-The-Date Cards in January (6 months to our wedding) and then probably put our announcement in the paper soon after. Our wedding announcement will be printed in the Sunday paper the day after the wedding.

we’re doing an engagement annoucement in our hometown paper b/c our families both still live there and want us to… I think it’s a nice tradition. My mom thought she read somewhere that you’re “supposed” to run this type of thing a few weeks before your wedding but I’d rather do it sooner (we’re about 6 months out now and will probably run it next month) since we’ve already been engagemed for 9 months it seems like old news!

It’s the country custom to make an announcement in my local newspaper too. Births, deaths, anniversaries, significant birthdays, weddings and engagements. It was the first wedding related task that my mother was involved in. The notice went in about two weeks after our engagement.

My mom really wanted us to do it and we were happy to. I remember looking at that section of the paper every Sunday and it just makes me happy. Our announcement was in the paper probably about 4 months into our engagement, when we still had a year before our wedding. We will be doing a wedding announcement too, when we get our wedding pics back. I just think it’s nice.
