If any of these people actually RSVP yes, then I do think you have a right to discuss the costs with your in-laws. I know that doesn’t solve your problem with your overall numbers being too large, but there is no reason why you should pay for guests you have never met. Our friends who paid for their own wedding also had the rule that both the bride and groom had to have met their parent’s friends in order for them to be invited. Since they dated for 10 years before getting married, it was quite reasonable.
Also, $50 is a lot for 15 invitations for people you don’t care about. Is there any way to make cheaper invitations just for them? Michaels’ invitations kits seem more reasonably priced, especially if you can use one of their coupons.
