@cupcakeface:  Have you tried talking to the neighbors?  Or if you don’t want to have you tried filing a noise complaint?  I currently have issues with the people in the office complex I work in.  The people that moved in upstairs decided it was a great idea to have a boot camp.  I’m a massage therapist.  That does not fly.  I will be working and trying to do a massage and all I can hear is the people upstairs running back and forth and dropping weights.  It got so bad that the chiropractor I work with came in to work this morning and there was actually dust covering EVERYTHING in the office from the ceiling tiles.  There was even a picture that fell down as a result of the vibration!  It’s ridiculous.  We have actually started putting our rent is escrow until they either get evicted or moved to a downstairs location.

@cupcakeface:  probably not want you want to hear but when we were in a situation with bad neighbors, we moved. we even broke our lease to do it. the management company was useless and so was the onsite manager. we lived in san francisco and we could’ve taken them to court for our deposit (because the laws here favor tenants over landlords) but at that point, we just wanted to be done with it and not be stressed anymore. we had tried talking the neighbor but he was a total asshole and said he had the right to play his music as loud as he wanted to.

i don’t know how the laws in NYC are but you might be able to break your lease and get your deposit back. document everything! call the cops if you need to.

I think we were the annoying neighbours!  In SOs old flat I was dancing around on the Xbox Kinect in my birthday suit and the lady came from downstairs to see what was going on.  So answered and explained, but I didn’t come out because I was, well, nude.  She really wanted to see I was okay, worried she’d call the police.

We have a few people who’s alarm goes off at 5am. Or play music (loudly) from 8am. Or the drums, I just leave them to it or if it’s really bad get security to sort it.

That SUCKS! We have college kids upstairs that like to party on Mondays and Thursdays from like 9pm until midnight… When we have to be awake at 5am the next morning (sigh). Hopefully they’ll get evicted eventually!

File a noise complaint if its a continuous thing, otherwise I am cool about it.

I’d file noise complaints any time I could, but especially when they are smoking weed, hoping that they get busted.

@cupcakeface:  i completely understand how you feel. we’ve only been out of that situation for a year so i remember all too well what it was like not being comfortable in your own apartment, not being able to relax, being super stressed out. it was all going on while i was planning our wedding too so that didn’t help. if it doesn’t seem like anyone is going to do anything about them, i would seriously suggest cutting your losses and moving… for the sake of your sanity!
