This is my second pregnancy. I suffered a miscarriage earlier this year. We announced to my in-laws yesterday that I’m pregnant. This first thing Mother-In-Law says to me is, “Watch what you eat. Don’t eat dark foods otherwise your baby will have dark skin.” I said that I don’t think the food I eat determines the baby’s skin tone. I’m pretty sure it’s all about genetics. Once she said it, I remembered her telling me that during my first pregnancy. We were eating at a japanese restaurant when we told them the news and she gave the side eye when I ordered curry. Then we went next door to get some ice cream and she told me to select a light colored ice cream so that my baby wouldn’t be dark! I still went ahead and orded exactly the flavors that I wanted…chocolate peanut butter and mint chocolate chip. This totally annoyed me because I do have a dark skin tone so I don’t care if my child is dark as well. And really, how is that the first thing she says to me? Not even congratulations.

rand04: WHAT?! NooooOOOOooooo! She can’t be serious!! Really?? Oh man, I’d eat all the black licorice in front of her that I could find. Oh, what if you eat broccoli?? Will the baby be green???

Wow… those comments are quite racist, ignorant and inappropriate.
Just ignore your Mother-In-Law, she obviously has some seriously odd ways of thinking.
(And congrats on your pregnancy! yay!)

rand04: Wow! That is incredibly ignorant. I guess she doesn’t know how genetics work.. Anyway, the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice. Your baby will be a beauty no matter what.

RedHeadKel: Right? She was telling telling me that I could eat strawberries though? Apparently my SIL ate them a lot when she was pregnant and her daughter is light skinned.
urchin: Thank you! 😀
leeshabee: Thank you! My thoughts exactly! I’m pretty dark myself so it’s like she’s saying she doesn’t want the baby to be dark like me.

OMG that is just awful. My Mother-In-Law thinks I should drink 2 dark beers a day, (starting now, 1st trimester) to help with milk production because I have small boobs. Oh and she thinks it is horrible that I sometimes drink mineral water and drink soy milk. You know because the carbonation in the water is “acidifying” and the soymilk, (which I only have in a a bowl of cereal), will give my baby man boobs or something. OK, whatever…

rand04: that’s so bizarre! I’m 37 weeks and have been eating chocolate cupcakes regularly. I’ll let you know if it affects my baby’s skin tone lol. Congrats and ignore her!

rand04: seriously wtf? has your Mother-In-Law last her mind??

What a psycho. this is about as good as my Mother-In-Law insisting that I’m infertile because I run, and my uterus must have fallen out already.

I would be less concerned about what you eat and more concerned with her blainant racism. What is wrong with having dark skin? All skin tones are beautiful!!!!!

What a peach! My Darling Husband has a saying “Don’t dislike any race/religion/orination because the moment you do, it will end up in your family.” I think every time she calls and asks what you are doing you should say eating dark chocolate and drinking black coffee.

rand04: woh…. really??? she is absolutely crazy and clearly racist.
I would eat ‘lighter’ coloured food and strawberries whenever your around her during your pregnancy and then when you give birth send her a photo of the darkest skin toned baby ever thanking her for the advice she gave you.

What the actual fuck?….I’d talk to your Darling Husband about what her deal is, and why she’s making ridiculous racist comments. What if your baby does have dark skin? Will she not love it as much, or god forbid, say this kind of crap around him/her? This is disturbing.

Whoa! Do you have paki/Indian in laws?? This totally sounds like a southeast Asian thing to say!
