As gross as Americans seem to think it is I am glad we don’t really have applicator tampons here (only tampax) so I can see before I stick hehehe. That is pretty gross thou 🙁

I kind of wonder where the tampon was stored, either while with the store that sold them, at Kotex, or at the girl’s house. I mean, if its stored under a sink (for example) and there was already mold and there was water dripping from the pipes onto the tampon box, that would be the perfect environment for the mold to grow. There’s other ways it could have grown too, like steam from showers or anything really.

Wow, I had to quit using tampons years ago but I’ve always bled too much and couldn’t take the “accidents” anymore so I started using them again.

I lived in England where mold grew on everything and I’m still overseas and our food grows mold in our fridge w/i a few days and occasionally comes through on our concrete walls….so I think I’m gonna start using the applicator free ones.

Thanks for the article.

I’d thoroughly recommend the Moon Cup (or other menstrual cups) to anyone who currently uses tampons.  Much more hygienic, better for the environment, cheaper in the long-run and much much better for anyone who bleeds heavily (as they hold a lot more than even the ‘super’ tampons do).  And as long as you sterilise it properly, no chance of any nasty bacteria or mould growth!

I am actually part of an online community and the girl who found the tampon is a member there. She posted there first when she found it. The tampon was from a brand new box 🙁

I stopped using tampons a few years ago and I use cloth pads now. I am SO glad… Something like mold on a tampon could kill you for goodness sakes.

That same company had other issues with their tampons before this one too…

@MissFlowerPot:  THIS sums it up for me too!

I can’t even imagine the horror I’d be in if this happened to me. Just, ugh!

Definitely going to try the diva cup when I get my IUD taken out… sheesh, another thing for us to worry about!! eek!!

Also, just reading about the other Kotex recall makes me really wonder about their company…

I have always used playtex, but it still makes you wonder…

YUCK.  But I do wonder how they were stored, or if any other tampons in the pack had this issue?

Regardless, it’s still gross and a little scary!

@clumsylawyer:  I know this is OT but I’ve always had an irrational fear of using one of these and getting it stuck and not being able to get it out. Also, I don’t even understand how they work! I’d love this option, but I can’t get my mind to stop freaking out about it.
