Background: We are being up front about our elopement and honestly not even really framing it as an elopement. We are telling people that we are taking our honeymoon prior to our reception and will exchange vows privately while there. We will then come home and have a great reception with family and friends.
The reception will be over labor day weekend. A lot of my fiances friends and family are out of state. We want to give them ample time to plan.
We are pretty confident we want to send out save the dates. I know these aren’t standard for this type of event but we’ve already thrown tradition to the side.
How would you word the save the date?
Below sounds wonky but I’m thinking something along the lines of:
With just their love and each other, JJ and R will exchange vows in a private ceremony 6/15/14.
A reception will be held 8/30/14 to celebrate with friends and family. Please save the date.

I wouldn’t word it as a reception. A reception takes place immediately after a ceremony thanking the guests for coming. I’d call it a celebration of their marriage.
JJ and R will exchange vows in a private ceremony on June 15, 2014.
Please save the date for a celebration of their marriage on August 30, 2014.

This is helpful because I want to do something similar!

@jj0313: We did something similar. Our invite was worded “request the pleasure of your company at a celebration of our marriage.”
Our STA said “As many of you know, Mrs. Canuck and Mr. Kiwi were married in a civil ceremony on (date.) It was lovely, but the big thing missing was all of you! We’d love you to join us for a celebration of our marriage on the evening of Friday, Sept. 20th in NYC. It’s our chance to bring our friends and family from around the world together and welcome you to NYC.
