Hello! Darling Husband and I have been thinking about names for our baby girl, but we haven’t really come up with anything other than the names listed in the poll. Curious to see which of these names you like best, and also whether you have any other suggestions?? We want a somewhat classic name that isn’t in the top 50 right now. Our last name sounds like Nava-lynn.
We’re not set on any middle names, but some we like are: Kathryn (after my mom, Catherine & sister, Katherine), Marie or Marin (variants of Mary, my grandmother’s name), Elise, Elizabeth, Claire, Ann (my middle name). Other ideas welcome!
*We’re considering naming our daughter after my dear friend Holly who passed away in June. Right now the name is still a little bittersweet, but if I can handle it, I’d like to honor my friend in that way. It’s weird though, everytime I say that name I just picture my friend… I can’t picture our baby. If you named your child after a loved one who passed away, did you find it difficult? Were you happy with the decision?

I was going to vote for Holly before I read your post now I definitely think Holly. Claire is my favorite middle name so I would choose Holly Claire. I do love Holly Marie though. 🙂

I’ve planned for years on naming my son after my grandfather, as we were very close. He passed over ten years ago so it’s not as “fresh” but I think it’s a sweet idea to name your daughter after someone close to you.
That said, I’m not huge on Marie because it’s such a common middle name. How about Holly Kathryn? Holly Claire is cute, too.

@iheartnerds: I kind of feel the same way about Marie… I think it’s pretty, but it’s really common. I really like Holly Kathryn or Holly Claire, but wasn’t sure if they flowed as well. I also wanted to somehow honor my grandma, but she always hated her name Mary, so I wanted to use a variation. Thanks for your input! 🙂

I love Lucia that’s such a pretty name 🙂

I think Holly Kathryn flows beautifully – maybe because I have a friend whose daughter is Holly Kathleen, so it sounds somewhat similar. I understand what you’re saying about Marie/Mary. It stinks when you love someone but not so much their name. 🙂

My favorite is Norah Claire or Norah Elizabeth.
Lucia is beautiful but I don’t care for Lucie. If you want to use Holly, I would for a middle name but I dont think any of your names would work with Holly for middle name.

@Pamelor55: I can’t seem to find a first name that works well with Holly as a middle name… Holly seems to only work as a first name!
We love Lucia but am a little concerned it might sound too Spanish or Italian? Our other concern is pronounciation, as Lucia has three pronunciations: loo-CHEE-ah (Italian), LOO-sha (English), and loo-SEE-a (English). We like the loo-See-a version best.
My husband really isn’t sure about Lainey and I’m not sure about Norah, so right now we are leaning towards Julia, Lucia, or Holly.
Thanks for the input!

I love Julia! Our favorite boys name starts with a J so I ruled it out but only for that reason. For Lucia, if you call her Lucy I cannot help but think of I Love Lucy, mainly because my mom and aunts always reference the show lol.
I think Holly would be very sweet and as your daughter grows older you could tell her wonderful stories about the woman she was named after. But I do understand how that could be hard to name your child after someone you are still mourning.

@78h2o: I love the name Lainey. I think it’s so cute!
I’m biased about Marie because that’s my middle name & I absolutely love it! My little girl’s middle name will be Marie as well.

I think Holly Kathryn is really pretty, Julia would be my next preference 🙂

@78h2o: I love the idea of naming her Holly. I know what a special person Holly was to you and I think that would be such an honor. However, since you did say you were unsure and felt a little bittersweet, I voted for Norah. Then I just read you don’t like Norah as much. What was Holly’s middle name?

I didn’t vote because I truly like all of them except for Lainey.
I think naming your daughter after your friend is a sweet gesture, and Holly is a beautiful name! That probably takes my top vote if you’re able to handle it.
Between Julia, Lucia and Norah I think Lucia is winning by just a smidge.

@roxy821: Yeah, I think of that Lucy too, but I don’t mind because I love Lucille Ball! I even dressed as Lucy for Halloween a few years ago. 🙂 I really like Julia though… that might be my favorite, except for the sentimental attachment to Holly.
@cafegirl: Thanks, for weighing in. 🙂 Yes, my friend Holly was really special to me… I wish I knew if I could handle naming our daughter after her. It’s just difficult for me to imagine anyone else with her name, since she was the only Holly I’ve ever known… but she was such an amazing person and I’d love for my daughter to hear about who she was named after. Holly’s middle name was Martha – after her grandma… yeah, that’s not happening! 😉
@MARIE901: Yeah, Marie is a beautiful name, though it’s used quite a bit. I like Lainey a lot too, but worry it’s not a “grown up” enough name. Have you chosen a first name for your baby girl?!
@Jacqui90: Holly Kathryn is a strong contender, as it would honor three of my favorite people!!! I’m glad you think it sounds okay together!
@September29: Thanks, that’s helpful! 🙂 My husband feels the same way… he likes all the names equally except for Lainey, which he’s not sure about.
