- Wedding: August 2012
I’ve been lurking here for a while but finally feel like I can legitimately post now that I’m officially engaged! 🙂
My fiance and I have been together for almost 5 years. We’ve both been married once before and have 3 boys between the two of us. We’ve known for years that we would marry, but have taken things slowly – largely for the kids.
Despite the fact that we’ve been taking about marriage for a long time, it seemed as though he’d never propose. With each holiday or special occasion, I’d hope that he would finally ask, but it never happened.
We agreed not to buy each other Christmas gifts this year because we were flying across the country to visit his family; plane tickets alone were a small fortune.
Because we knew we’d be out of town on Christmas, we decided to have a family celebration with my mom on 12/17. In the midst of the chaos of the boys opening gifts, fiance asked one of them to bring me a box that was under the tree. It was kind of big and wrapped in brown craft paper. I had no idea what it could be – especially since we decided not to exchange gifts. I opened it and found a small pink gift bag inside. At that point, I knew it would be jewelry, but never suspected it would be a ring. I was a bit shocked because I’m super picky about jewelry, which he knows, so he’s never bought me any. I opened the bag and found a huge plastic ring inside – the kind you’d get at a costume store (which, it turns out, is exactly where he did get it). I chuckled (and kind of rolled my eyes) thinking he was just trying to be funny. Then I noticed a gift tag inside the bag. It said “Marry Me”. I burst into tears, jumped up and kissed him. He whispered “Will you marry me?”.
All of this happened in front of the kids and my mom. Not at all how I pictured it would happen. But, it was absolutely perfect for us. I love that my family was there to be a part of it.
Of course, we’ll be buying a “real” ring soon. I’m looking forward to finding the perfect ring together. And to officially becoming a family.
We are looking at a destination wedding this summer. 🙂
