Can anyone recommend an affordable tailor/seamstress in the LA area? My wedding dress is coming in late! I will pick up the dress on 5/23 and the wedding is two weeks later on 6/7. I don’t anticipate any major alterations like taking the dress in a few sizes but will probably have to take in some of the bust, shorten, add silk-covered buttons along the back zipper, and build a bustle. I can have the work done by the dress shop, but am not prepared to pay the $500+ that they will charge me. I’ve already checked w/ Mahtab in OC, but she is completely booked. =(

I’m not sure where you are located but out here in Thousand Oaks, there is a fantastic seamstress. I found her through a rec on theknot. Heres the phone number, maybe she is available (805) 497-3075

Rksbride, I went to a seamstress in San Gabriel that works out of her home; she was recommended to me by another bee. The only thing is that her English is not great. I think she understands English but doesn’t speak that well.
Anyway, she took in the bust (I had a built-in corset with boning and beading, so it was not easy), shortened the hem, and did a three-point bustle. It turned out perfect. And she charged me a total of $80 (!!!).
PM me if you want her contact info.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to Uniquely Yours in Northridge. Carmela stepped on the dress with her dirty sneakers FOUR times, lost beads off the dress, and chopped off the bottom of the dress without asking – all during the quote!
I’d advise to use a shop, even if it’s more expensive. An individual can do a bad job and still charge you, like this lady did. The extra money is a guarantee that they are held responsible for damage to your dress!
