So I just read the thread by GreenEyedMoon about her stray mama kitty adventures…we have that going on here too.
About a year ago a stray appeared with three kittens, so we started feeding them out of pity and concern. We couldn’t take them in because we have two cats and a very elderly dog already (she’s 17!) so we thought we would feed them a little, catch them and give them away like we have done before. Wrong! Mama was very standoffish–hissing all the time.
So over the course of the summer, fall, winter, they got dependent on us. When winter came I was so worried that Fiance built them a cathouse (LOL) in the yard, with a raised floor, a tent structure with a heavy oriental rug over it, rugs on the floor and then a plastic tarp over the whole thing to make it waterproof. Then he put a heating pad in it for warmth. Worked like a charm! Every day I would feed them cat food (dry and wet) and warm milk. They were thriving.
One of the kittens disappeared in early fall so it was just mama and two kitties. Then two weeks ago the calico (now about 10 months old) who was the female, the runt and very shy got run over by a car in the night. That was the last straw, I was SO upset. Fiance took her and buried her so I never saw her but I’m still so sad over it. I got my friend to take the other (super sweet male) kitten and we were left with mama, who was obviously pregnant again.
She got friendlier, finally…after almost a year she finally stopped hissing at us and would actually let you pet her for a second, or would rub on your legs when you fed her. Today, she was acting weird…meowing CONSTANTLY, incessantly, and rubbing her face all over everything, lost interest in her food. I think she’s in labor, or about to be! On Mother’s Day, how apropos!
Will fill you all in as things develop, stay tuned for newborn kitteh pics!
