@MissPine: In NY it depends on the district you are in and degree you hold. For a bachelors it could range from 35-45. I don’t know the salary range for all school disstricts, but from the ones I do know that is the range

In the DC area (well Northern Virginia), my friends make about 61-65k and they’re about 25 years old, but they all have masters and teach high school (which I believe makes more than elementary/middle school?). I believe they are topped out at 85k.

I’m in a good school district in suburban Philly…. bachelor’s + 0 years experience starts around 48,000.  But I have my Master’s and this is my 3rd year.  Our scale tops out at over 100,000.

I’m not a teacher, but I have an ed degree and have many teacher friends.  Around rural Minnesota it starts around $30,000 – $35,000.  During my student teaching time in Houston, Texas, I was offered a contract for $40,000 something.  Of course, the easiest way to bump your salary is to do extra curriculars like after school clubs, coaching, being the advisor to groups like prom, etc.

In my NJ suburban average district, starting is about 43 – 45,000 – this is without a masters or any experience.

I live in Los Angeles and the salary scale starts around $45,000 in LAUSD.  I was just hired at a charter school in the LA area as a first year teacher with one of two years of a master’s degree under my belt and I’ll be starting at about $47,000.

In my district, a first year teacher with just a bachelors starts at 44k.  I don’t remember what the top of the payscale is, though.

In Boston, starting salary with a bachelor’s degree and no experience is $46K (or was in 2010.. I found a payscale online). Average teacher salary in Boston is $85K. It’s similar in wealthy suburbs, but once you start moving west or north away from the city, salary goes down pretty drastically.

@jaguar:  I am so tempted to come teach in Australia!  It seems all jobs earn more there than here!

In NZ the starting rate is between 34k (3 year teaching diploma) to 46k (4 years tertiary study).  So it really depends on your qualifications.

Well isn’t this making me sad haha. I started in Chicago suburbs with 43,000 and moved to Colorado and now make 31,800. Obvi, I picked the wrong state : )
