So, im two weeks pp and I figured its time to write out my birth story. I’m on my iPad, so brace yourself for typos!
my due date ended up getting changed to June 20, from June 18 in the final weeks of my pregnancy.
I went to my 39 week apt, and I was starting to show a little protein in my urine, but nothing to be alarmed about. Ob told me that we would let me go to 41 weeks, and induce on June 26-27 if I hadn’t gone on my own by then. Later that week (Thursday) I had a bit of green discharge, so I called l&d and they told me to come get checked out. i went, and while nothing was happening, I was still showing protein in my urine, and my blood pressure was slightly elevated, but again, nothing to be very concerned about.
The followinTuesday, June 18, was my 40 week apt. Still showing protein in my urine, my ob sent me to the hospital for a round of blood work and urinalysis. He told me that based on the results, he didn’t want to wait any longer, and would induce me either that night, or the following night.
turns out I had a lot of protein in my urine, so ob told me to go to l&d that night for the gel. I was not prepared to have a baby within the next 24 hrs! Darling Husband and I went home, finished the nursery decor and had a good supper.
Pew nt to l&d for 8 pm and I got hooked up to the monitors. Turns out, although I couldn’t feel them, I was having regular contractions about 7 mins apart. I on call ob examined me, said I was about 1 cm dilated, and gave me the cervadil gel. He said that if I went into labour over night, to come back when my contractions were 5 mins apart, but likely I’d just need to come back at 8 am for another round of gel.
Darling Husband and weren’t home and went to bed.
I woke up around 1:20 with some cramps. I can best describe them as mild Charlie horses in the uterus. Lol. I laid in bed and kind of dozed and tried to keep track of how close together they were coming. I thought they were coming about 3 mins, but didn’t trust my sleepy self. So I got up to pee, and had my bloody show when I wiped.
I came out to the living room to sit on my ball and actually time my contractions, but I suck at timing them. So I had a drink and just hung out on th ball for as long as I could.
Around 3am, I woke up Darling Husband and asked him to time them for me. Sure enou, they were 3 mins or less apart and ranging from 30 sec to a min in length. Darling Husband called l&d and thy told us to come in.
We got to the hospital around 3:30. They hooked me up to th monitor and sure enough, contractions 3 mins apart! What I didn’t realize was that I was actually contracting back to back. Id have a strong one, and then a mild one immediately after, and then a break in contractions. After I got settled and monitored, they gave me a shot of morphine.
the nurse told me that I was about 2cm dilated, however I was already 80-90% effaced. I was pretty shocked about that!
after being monitored for the morphine, I was allowed to get in the jacuzzi tub around 5am. It was awesome. I only had the jets on for a elite while, but sitting in the warm water was a godsend! I stayed in there for almost 3 hrs. It was a slow night on the unit, and I was the only patient.
Around 7:30, Darling Husband finally convinced me to g out of the tub ( I kept refusing to get out). As we walked back to the room, we passed the epi dr, who was apparently just waiting around for me to get out of the tub..lol.
They checked me before I got my epi, and I had gone from 2 cm to 7 while I was in thE tub.
I got my epi after I got back in bed. This was honestly what I was most scared about, but the dr was amazing, worked around my contractions, and explained everything to me as he was doing it. by this time, I’d only had the morphine, which was pretty much worn off, and baby’s head was super low, so sitting on the side of the bed hunched over was super painful.
more try much as soon as I got the epi, they told me I was almost 10 cm.
After the epi took effect I felt great. My ob came in arLund 8 and to,d me that he was at another hospital that day, so he wouldn’t be there for delivery, but I knew that based on our conversation we’d had the day before.
After he left, I actually got to sleep for a bit. The nurse told me that I was 10 cm but my water handset broken yet, and the on call ob wanted to wait to see if it would break on its own. So I slept from 8 until 10:30am, at which point I thought I felt a trickle. They checked, but my membranes were still iN tact. The ob decided to break my water at that point.
By 11 am I was ready to push, and the nurse told me that I was pushing so effectively that I’d have a baby within an hour. This really surprised me and really motivated me to work hard to get the tittle guy out.
However, 12 came and went, and 1 came and went, and still no baby. Thy determined that his head was turned the wrong way, and he swas stuck at my pubic bone. Fortunately, he was not in distress, so we pushed until 1:30. At that time, th ob decided that I needed some help since baby’s head wasn’t coming down any more, and I was exhausted. ( In my state of exhaustion, I asked Darling Husband why he had bought a bed that was uneven…they had lowered the bottom of the bed, but didn’t take it away. This confused me apparently).
So, the ob came in and told me they e going to use forceps to get the baby out. At this point, my epi had worn off, and I could feel him pinching me down below as he was testing out how frozen I ws. I was not frozen. So they gave me a second round of epi, including the stuff they give when some one gets a section, a shot of fentanyl and a shot of morphine. I was frozen up to mid chest (Eventually).
Once all the drugI were in dyne ob got down to business and used the forceps to get baby out. Up until then, while everything was uncomfortable, I can’t say anything was excruciating. The forceps delivery was. Ob pulled baby out in about 2 pushes, and as his head and shoulders came out, it was really really painful. I don’t think they waited long enough for the second round of epi to fully take effect.
Hunter Allan was born on June 19 at 1:54pm, 12.5 hrs after I woke up with contractions. He was 8lbs 10 oz, and 21.5 inches long.
We did a bit of delayed cord clamping, and they placed him on my chest. He was wide awake and looking all around, but not really crying.
PI ended up with a few stitches ( which I could feel, once I realized what was going on).
Rcovery has been pretty good. I was really swollen for a few days. Hunter had a few marks and bruises from the forceps, but they went away pretty fast. The nurse told me that compared to how my lady parts looked post delivery, his head looked really good.
Hunter is two weeks old now Ian’s really is a good baby. We get 3-4 hr stretches out othis for sleep at night, and breast feeding has been pretty good, with a few little bumps in the road here and there.
