I’ve used Trazadone for insomnia & half the dose the doctor rx’d usually knocks me out.  The only complaint I have about it is dry mouth–I mean really bad dry mouth.  There are products you can get for that, like Biotene.  But that was a real problem for me with Trazadone.

I’ve been on Trazadone on and off.  I recommend getting the name brand, the generic sucks.  It helps me sleep really well actually, and I don’t feel like crap when I wake up.  Plus, some nights I take it, some nights I don’t.  It’s really if I feel like I will not be able to fall asleep by myself.

@deetroitwhat:

Does it give you dry mouth or is that just me?

have not taken Trazodone… prozac and paxil here… but dont worry about stigmas, so many people take them for different reasons now adays… and I say if it helps you then bring on the stigmas!

I used to have terrible problems sleeping (no issue falling asleep, but would wake up every night at like 2am and could NOT get back to sleep!). My doc put me on trazadone in the same Rx you have now (50mg per night), and it was a lifesaver. It knocked me out and kept me out through the night. I had no issues going off of it either once I was able to sleep through the night on my own.

If you are worried about stigma, you could always tell peeps you take a “sleep aid”, or just not tell them at all πŸ™‚

Why tell anyone other than your partner & medical professionals with a need to know what meds you take & why?

I have been taking Trazadone for about a year and a half.  It really helps me sleep which in turn makes the rest of my life a lot better.  I have had nothing but great results with it.

I also use Trazodone to help me sleep and have for several years. I believe the dosage for it to be used as an anti-depressant is much higher (like 300mg), and not the 50mg dose. I also take Savella for Fibromyalgia and Tramadol, both of which have some anti-depressant qualities.

I’ve been taking Trazodone for about 6 months now. I find if I take a whole one I wake up feeling a little groggy but it wears off by mid morning. Usually I just take half of one and it helps get me to sleep and helps me stay asleep. However if I’m super stressed about something, or I’m having obsessive, racing thoughts, I’ll take a whole one.

I don’t consider myself addicted to it. I don’t take it every night. I only take it if I know I have a big day the next day and I NEED to sleep, or if I’m having crazy obsessive thoughts while trying to get to sleep.  I definitely don’t feel I need it all the time, but it does guarantee me a full nights sleep. The only side effect I’ve had is that I have crazy dreams, not scary, just really vivid. But I get those with Nyquil/Benadryl etc. Hope this helps! good luck!

p.s I think my pills are 100mg. But my doc put me on it not only because of my trouble with sleeping, but also because she’s told me she doesn’t think I have OCD per se, but that I have obsessive thoughts, and I have trouble quieting my mind at night.

When I was still taking Prozac and Wellbutrin, I was also on Ambien because that combination caused sleep disturbances. The Prozac made me dream almost constantly so I woke up exhausted every day, but the Ambien did help. Now that I’m off them (I was taking them only to treat the secondary symptom of depression–I have PTSD), I sleep like a damn rock…though I wake earlier than I’d like to. At least I’m still well-rested.

My first psychiatrist, who was an honest-to-god failboat, wanted to put me on Trazodone in addition to the Ambien. I said no, mainly because you can’t take it for like two weeks before surgery and I was having a thyroidectomy later that month. I also read/was informed that it’s sometimes used as an antipsychotic drug (though more commonly for depression and anxiety than anything else), which freaked me out a little. But I have heard that it knocks you the eff out!

i was on trazodone for insomnia awhile, and i was never really a fan. i think i was mildly allergic to it because i would have congestion/breathing issues about an hour after i took it, never fail. it’s not a drug that has a high risk for dependency either, iirc.
