Hello there! I’m a very regular poster – but I’m using a different name that my usual screen name because – obviously I’m paranoid that someone I know might find this post, lol, and I’ve only told two people that I’m ON an anti-depressant…
So. here’s the thing. I’ve had sleep issues for as long as I can remember. I’ve had a sleep study done – got put on one drug, didn’t really work/help so I stopped it.
I’ve also been dealing with some OCD issues lately (that I’ve had for YEARS but only now dealing with them) and been seeing a therapist. My therapist suggested I talk to my primary care physician about the options of an anti-depressant…
while I understand that many perscription drugs can absolutely work wonders – there’s also always that “stigma” around taking them that’s really hard to get over.
So back to the sleep thing (i swear it’s all related!)…so I go see my sleep doc for a follow up the other day and I told him how I’m trying to deal with OCD stuff by seeing a therapist and how she suggested I talk to my primary about going on an antidepressant to help out…I asked him what his opinion on them are and whether or not it would help my insomnia and if it’s all connected.
He said – “of course, everything is inter-connected in the body. If you’re suffering from anxiety from your racing mind, then of course that’s something that absolutely affects your sleep.” So he prescribed me a drug called “Trazodone” which IS an anti depressant – but it’s been on the market for MUCH longer than the popular ones everyone knows about (paxil, zoloft, prozac, lexapro, etc) and is not an SSRI but an SARI and has a few different properties than those others do. PLUS he said it is used for insomniacs a lot – to help them sleep. While it’s not technically approved by the FDA specifically for sleeping it’s always been used for that reason by medical professionals. BUT it’s main approved use is for depression.
I’ve done some internet research on it and it seems like it really does help a LOT of people with insomnia actually get normaly healthy sleep again! I’ve also read that it helps a lot of people with OCD – and those WITH OCD specifically who also ARE insomniacs!
but yeah. I’m just wondering – any of you out there on any? I’m only on 50mg right now and am to up it to 100mg next week. I’m just wondering what all of your experiences are on anti-depressants – and hopefully specfically Trazodone (Dyseral).
I guess my biggest fear – while the doc swore it’s NOT addictive – I don’t want to end up having to rely on it for the rest of my life in order TO sleep. plus we will be TTC in the next few months/year and obviously, too, i do NOT want to be on one while i’m pregnant…
