I have done many…going to plain food, adding pumpkin, brown rice…Immodium is perfectly fine for dogs. Won’t hurt them, and helps in a total emergency.

Usually this antibiotic is given when treating diarrhea in parvo positive puppies.  My puppy was just 11 weeks old when he caught parvo and the vet prescribed this for treatment for him.

Sparkidoodle:  said, “I personally wouldn’t give the metronidazole. One of the common side affects is gastroenteritis! (specifically diahorrea and cramps)”

While it’s four years later, I want to respectfully disagree in the event in can help someone’s beloved dog; based on the erroneous comment, others may misunderstand the medication.

Metronidazole actually fights (cures) various enteritis due to bacterial infection and/or bowel inflammation. Diarrhea usually stops same day. It’s amazing stuff when needed! Otherwise, my dog – and others noted here – would suffer for days to weeks with blood appearing by about day 3.  A dog’s untreated enterisits is miserable and can even be damaging when not addressed properly by something like Metronidazole.
