My grandmother is a nursing home resident. I am pretty much in charge of “her”, and I cannot afford to pay out of pocket, therefore she is on Georgia Nursing Home Medicaid.
She has a life insurance policy that she’s had since the 80’s with my brother and me as beneficiaries. The state will take this upon her passing, correct?

Medicaid Estate Recovery programs differ by state. There is a federal minimum, but states can go beyond. It looks like you’re in GA. You might want to call the county office to clarify whether life insurance is part of the Estate Recovery program.
Here’s an analysis by a law firm – http://www.mcguffey.net/estaterecovery.htm
Georgia DCH site with an explanation and FAQs – http://www.georgia.gov/00/channel_title/0,2094,31446711_31835571,00.html
And the regulations addressing the program – http://www.georgia.gov/vgn/images/portal/cit_1210/7/13/46190895111-3-8_estate_recovery_rules.pdf
They do address hardship waivers and transfering of assets. The law firm also explains exceptions and other items that can be paid prior to Medicaid.
Hope this helps a bit.
