Hi! It’s not my business, but I do work from home as an independent contractor for a very small (employee-wise) business. It’s a clothing company and I do a lot of their online store work, listing all their items, quality control, etc. They acually ship all the product to my home (about 6-8 boxes worth a day) and I need to drop them off at their warehouse 1-3 times a week after I’m finished working with it (but that’s easy because it’s right in my hometown). Thank goodness I have an SUV!

I ABSOLUTELY love it. But, I definitely think you have to have the personality to pull it off. If you’re a total people person, you’ll be bored to pieces. I have much more of a introverted personality. I like to work hard, but I enjoy time alone, and I like staying in the background. I also have a bit of anxiety, so working at home on my own time, in my own space, is perfect for me.

It’s great for a lot of reasons. Basically, I make my own hours, I can work as little or as much as I want, and there’s no one standing over my shoulder. If I have a dr’s appt or an errand to run, then I can go. No need to ask for time off. I basically control my income. I also have a pretty sick dog that needs 24/7 oversight, so I’m home to watch him. It would also be a great side job once we have kids.

A downfall is there’s no benefits, but that’s not too big of an issue right now since I’ll be under FI’s in just a couple months. There’s also no taxes taken out, so tax season is dreadful instead of exciting in terms of getting $ back. I have to pay a ton. You also have to be super motivated and have a lot of self-discipline, and push yourself to get to your desk when it would be so easy to just stay in bed a few feet away!

Are you thinking of doing this? I’d totally recommend it.
