I was totally shocked with the Fiance when he proposed. We went looking for rings one day in December because it was Christmas and shiny jewelry makes me smile. I wasn’t even really looking at diamond rings. We went by a store and I saw a gorgeous ring in the window and we went inside to ask about it. It was a tension set diamond with paver diamonds around the band. I tried it on for fun, made some “one day” jokes and then we moved on. The Fiance asked if that was “my perfect ring” and I said “Well, I would prefer a solitary and the profile was too high, but I LOOOOVE that setting!”
Well about a month later he asked if he saw us being married in the future and I said I enjoyed my time with him and really treasured him, so I could see it. A month after THAT (over Valentine’s Day) we went to visit his parents in the Florida Keys. On Valentine’s Day he decided we would go stay at a Bed & Breakfast in Key West and have some fun. So we all drove down there and stayed at this awesome little place. On Valentine’s Day morning he woke me up early and convinced me we needed to go seashell combing for my nieces. Then he proposed with my perfectly envisioned ring!
I guess he had it custom made and ordered the day after we went ring shopping. He almost didn’t get it in time and even hid it in his sock so if the TSA opened his bag they wouldn’t expose the ring! The sad thing was EVERYONE knew before me (my family, his family, the Bed & Breakfast guy, and even the two people who took us snorkeling/diving) yet I didn’t even have a CLUE it was happening! Maybe because I was used to dating guys for 3 or 4 years with no proposals, so after dating for 8 months I never even considered it on the radar.
We set the date a year and a half after the proposal though so we have had plenty of time to get to know each other and that just makes me MORE excited to be his wife. 🙂

awe cute! I was totally blindsided when we got engaged (m an old married lady now ;)) I seriously had NO clue it was coming. Wasnt even thinking about it, I was happy with where we were. He was super tricky about how he knew what ring I wanted though!

Very cute story!
I have a tension set E-RING too and I love it!

I was completely shocked as well. I had no idea he’d even been ring shopping, let alone had purchased one. I was not expecting a proposal for at least another 6-12 months. Fiance is good at keeping secrets, I guess–although he said it was one of the hardest things he’d ever done, since we usually tell each other everything 🙂

I was in complete shock. We had ‘the talk’ and i told him to wait til I got a career after college and worked for a year. But it turns out he proposed a few days before graduation. I had this whole personal timeline in my mind that was going to happen for us. He is however a few years older and is established (stable career and bought a house). I was expecting him to propose in a year at least!

I was completely surprised too! We had been talking about it during college, etc, and then moved in together after we graduated. It came up here and there, but finally I dropped the subject because I didn’t seem to be getting anywhere.
Well, we took a trip to New Husband to climb Mt. Washington (the tallest mountain in the NE) and his brother came with us. The thought didn’t even cross my mind during that trip that he would propose since his brother was there!
We hiked to the top (took 4-5 hours), and after lunch he proposed on the observation deck! His brother was there to take pictures for us! 😀
That’s me (above) saying, “You’ve got to be kidding me! I had no idea!”

@Kelly: That is how I felt! He didn’t get down on one knee (bad knees), so he dropped it in the sand behind me sneakily and then said “There is a really cool shell behind you. Grab it!” So when I turned around I saw the box and said “Aww…you didn’t have to get me a Valentine’s Day present!” When I opened the ring box and saw the diamond my first thought was “Well this is too pricey for a Valentine’s Day gift.” Then he recited a prepared little speech he had and about halfway in the middle I was like “What?! YOU’RE PROPOSING!!” He just started laughing.
@Future Mrs. Martin: I love mine! It is actually my wedding ring too (it is a modern cut euro shank and just looks silly with any band I’ve tried with it.)
@hilsy85: I never saw the Fiance as much of a secret guy, but he sure pulled on over on me!

@ley_ley: That is so awesome you have pictures! We were by ourselves and I forgot my camera. 🙁
I will still remember it though!

Fiance and I had talked about getting engaged multiple times before so I knew we were going to be at some point. But based on the timing we’d discussed, I wasn’t expecting anything for another 4 months or so! I’ve since learned that he had purposefully told me these things so I wouldn’t be expecting it and would be completely surprised when it happened! My Fiance is so cute!

I had literally NO IDEA!! We’d talked about having a future together, but never about getting married in any sort of real sense, and we never went ring shopping. Because I used to work for a diamon wholesaler, he was able to gether enough info on what sort of ring I would like, and during a weekend trip while were were sitting in the grass chatting, he popped up on 1 knee!

I had no idea. At all…
But he had no idea either!
Neither of us proposed. We were having a conversation about our future together, and it was our first time telling each other that we wanted it to be forever. We decided on a approximate date right then and there, and we were engaged, and so the planning began!
A shocker for both of us, haha!
