I have a B.A. in Econ and don’t use it for a job. I rarely saw jobs when I was job searching that I would have qualified for. However, my friends who did the business program & maybe double majored in Finance are working in general business jobs like asset management, analysts, etc. To really do economics as a career, you pretty much have to get a PhD.

My Fiance got his BA in Econ and has worked since college as an economist at a consulting firm. One of our friends who also majored in Econ used to work with my Fiance and now works for a large, well-known company doing marketing analysis. A friend recently told us that there is a need for economists in the government, in intelligence. You definitely have options, and a quantitative/analytical background is a great asset.

@kateisstoned:  I’m an admin asst in the study abroad office at my alma mater. It’s not glamorous, but I really enjoy & I have tuition benefits if I ever decide what I want to do more long term. I’ll probably never directly apply my econ degree, but at the same time, I think the analytical style of thinking that I learned helps me immensely. Compared to lots of other liberal arts degrees, I think it’s really solid & impressive; which is not to knock other programs, but I just think economists see the world differently, and it’s a great skill.
