I did not do my own makeup.  I like how I do my makeup for everyday purposes, but for my wedding I wanted something a bit more dramatic (without being heavy) and something that would last all day and night.  Two things that I just did not think I could accomplish on my own with my limited skills.

I think that if you do decide to do your own makeup, go to Sephora or Ulta or MAC to really talk to a consultant to get the best products for your skin, length of wear, and for the look you are wanting.  And then practice, practice, practice.  Take pictures of yourself in all sorts of lighting and from all angles to see what the end result will look like.  Remember, at the end of it all, you will only have pictures to look back on so you want to make sure that your makeup looks good in the pictures.

I plan to do my own makeup. I think I would regret paying someone to do my makeup. For whatever reason, the general rules/guidelines/tips that work well for most people look horibble on me. I’ve had more than 10 professional makeovers done in my lifetime for a variety of reasons and none of them looked better than what I can do on my own. It’s the same thing with my hair. Then I get really sad because I paid someone and end up just doing it myself anyway. If you decide to do your own makeup, definitely practice well in advance and take photos wearing whatever color you’ll be wearing for your wedding to get a real idea of how it will look.

I did my own makeup after doing lots of research and trying different products, and I think I looked great and it didn’t add any extra stress because I’m such a control freak, I think I would have been more stressed trusting someone else to do it!

CakeSniffer:  I know, right? I would love to wear a sophisticated RED but I don’t want to look like a clown! But those makeup girls wearing those really mod dark lipsticks and huge winged-eyes scare me!

CakeSniffer:  I am no help with lips because I am like you minus the lip gloss.  I have tried so many shades of lipstick and I think anything but something very close to my natural lip color (what I wore on my wedding) looks weird on me.  Once my lipstick for my wedding wore off, it stayed off.  Plus I tend to lick/bite at my lips so wearing lipstick just would never work for me…to much reapplying.

But if you do decide to use a professional I think the best way to judge their work is by looking at their face/makeup.  If you like how they do their own then it is probably safe to assume that is how they would makeup their clients.  So steer clear of the orange colored ladies with foot long false lashes 🙂

One suggestion I would make would be to make sure you apply it a little heavier than you normally do, because it will show up better in photos! I didn’t when I did my makeup and I didn’t love how it looked.

CakeSniffer:  I regretted not doing my own makeup if that makes you feel any better LOL.

As far as recommendations for lip products, what color are you thinking? I can give some suggestions.

I’m going to do my own makeup. I’m having a very small beach wedding and paying someone to do my makeup would add a considerable percentage to our budget, plus the beach is a 4 hour drive so there’s no way to do a trial more than 15 hours before. I’d rather just trial on myself for the next few months.

The way I see it, I’ve never had some major issue with my makeup. I did my own makeup for my graduation, my mom took the photos on my DSLR camera, and everything looks great! Almost exactly one year later, we’ll be doing the same for my wedding. Our photos will be good, I can’t imagine looking at them wondering what’s up with my makeup (because I’ve never thought that in my life), and I don’t feel like going above and beyond for the people I am closest to.

My wedding just doesn’t mean that much to me I guess. I know I’m in the minority. But anyway, there’s loads of videos on YouTube on bridal makeup. Study them, play around, and you will be good!

CakeSniffer:  gotcha, I’m pale as well so I feel your pain. Definitely head to the drugstore and check out Revlon’s Balm Stain in the color Honey. For most people it’s a “my lips but better” color and it’s a stain so it lasts all day. The good thing about it is it’s also a balm so your lips don’t feel dry.

I did my own.  I only wish I wuld have applied more blush.  I put two types on and it felt like it was a lot but you couldnt see it in pictures so I feel like i look a little pale.  I even had my hair dresser who also did make up to touch it up with some contouring.  I do not regret doing my own though.  I am sure I can change some of the photos i dont love as much with editing!
