My best friend had a friend get ordained online (Universal Life Church) and officiated her wedding.  As far as I know anyone can do it once ordained, there’s not other special processes you have to go through.

In California, who can officiate your wedding is based on the county, not the state.  You need to visit the registrar website for OC and check in with them or call the office and ask specifically about a ULC marriage.  I got married in a *super* liberal county (Santa Cruz), so the ULC ordination was no problem, but – like I said – it varies by county.

At my first wedding in 2001, we had my dad officiate in CA. It was in LA County and he didn’t have to get ordained or anything. It was like a “justice of the peace for a day” type of thing.

@lellenn:  SC offers that, too, but you have to pay a fee for the JoP certificate, so we figured ULC was cheaper (our friend already had the certification from ULC).
