It needs to be formated to like Fat32 or Fat64 so you can use the EHD for both Mac & PC. Macs & PCs don’t get along here, if you have an EHD that works for Mac, it won’t work for PC & vice versa. Unless you have the Fat32 formatting, you’ll need a Mac computer to get your stuff off your EHD.
Do NOT reformat it or you will lose everything currently on your EHD!!

I have a hard drive that I use to back up my macbook. It’s not networked or anything, I just plug it in and drag and drop stuff I want to save. Now my macbook is dead and I’m using my work laptop, a thinkpad with Windows XP. When I attach the hard drive, the computer makes a sound saying it’s connecting, shows the safely eject icon in the taskbar, and I can see the hard drive listed under hte device manager window. But I can’t see it under My Computer at all. I want to back up what is on my computer so I’m not saving personal stuff on my work computer, as well as save and access the files already on the hard drive. Any advice?

I think harddrives need to be formatted a specific way in order to be seen on both a Mac and a PC. I think the default setting for Macs, you can’t see on a PC. Is there a Mac you can hook it up to?
