I’m a plus size gal, and I hated dress shopping, until I found one that flattered my figure.  I’m trying to embrace a healthier lifestyle, but, I didnt’ buy a smaller size or anything like that.  I’m not going to stress myself out about trying to lose weight just to look good in my dress.  My Fiance fell in love with me the way I am, and I accept that.  I’m waaay older now too, this is a second wedding for me, and I’ve learned to love myself whatever size I am.

I think if you exude confidence that’s the key.  If you walk tall and are proud, you’ll look great, and won’t give a hoot what anyone thinks.

Here is me in the dress I chose.  I go for my first fitting Sept 1, so, obviously, it will fit better, but, here goes.20150317_132842

I was really terrified and stressed about dress shopping, but I felt like a million bucks once I put on the right one (and was lucky that it was only the 4th try). I was very adamant about this being the one day where I wouldn’t “settle” for something, which I often feel I end up doing as a plus-sized girl. I wouldn’t let your friend’s comments sway you one way or another – it’s about how YOU feel when you look in the mirror. Rock your curves 🙂

Im a first year costume and fashion design student and my aim in life is to open a boutique which caters for women of all sizes. When I got married 10 years ago I could not find one dress shop that had a dress I could try on in my size. It was so demoralising! I did find a dress but I think i ‘made do’ and was never really happy when trying the dresses on.

So, if you could at all, I’d really appreciate if you could answer a short survey on this subject. It would greatly help me in my research, to ensure what i want to do would be successful.

Thanks beautiful ladies,

Sofie

SofieD:  I filled out the survey, and thanks for the compliment.  I can’t wait for a fitting.

I always pictured myself smaller, but I honestly never pictured myself any “prettier,” whatever that means. I’m a size 16 in street clothes (used to be 24-ish, and I’ve lost a lot of weight, but the proportions are all off as a result of the weight loss), but I found the perfect dress for me. I believe that the perfect wedding dress is out there for anyone who looks for them. Wedding dresses are different than regular dresses. They are typically structured and made to flatter different body styles.

bonbon663:  Thanks so much! I spend the better part of my afternoon posting links on forums and this forum has, by far, yeilded the most response. Just as a matter of interest, are you in the US? Im from Australia (melbourne) and we have NO shops that have ready to wear dresses in sizes for fuller figured women.

SofieD:  I’m in Canada, and there were lots of places that had plus size samples.  It was cool having some dresses way too big….LOL.

The dress I ended up getting wasn’t a plus size design, but, luckily it did come in plus sizes.

bonbon663:  Thanks again. Im glad there is somewhere in the world where beautiful, real women can experience dress shopping without being tied into a dress!
