Out of curiosity, are those silk flowers? Is your friend planning to use silk flowers? I’m planning on doing a real flower and brooch bouquet and my bouquet is like $150 and I’m sourcing the brooches myself. I’m overpaying (based on what other Bees have noted) at about $20/brooch, which still makes the cost of mine cheaper than $500 and mine is being assembled by my florist. I can’t imagine the feathers to be like $200 or something. I’m also in Southern California, where everything seems to cost more than elsewhere in the US.

Did your friend offer to provide the brooches/feathers or is the $400-500 for the entire bouquet as it looks in the photo?

I ask because when I was initially getting quotes from florists, it came out to the $250-350 range depending on the number of brooches I wanted because the florists said they would have to find brooches that fit what I wanted (e.g. the colors of the wedding) and that takes time/gas/labor/etc. So when I offer to provide all the non-floral elements myself, then all they had to do was just the live flowers part of it. The brooches themselve will incur a minor labor cost, but all they need to do is seal the pin part so it doesn’t come loose (or you can do it yourself) with glue and then attach the floral wire to it to make a “stem”. Again, brooches are definitely not cheap but it is probably cheaper if she finds them herself, like at vintage stores/ebay/etc. The assumption is that the florist is going to go wherever it is most convenient; she’s not going to sit there and snipe cheap ones from eBay or search on Google for hours to find the cheapest ones.

So my recommendation is to ask the florists (get bids!!!) and see how much it would be if she provided all the non-floral materials (e.g. feathers and brooches) and they did the assembly and sourced the flowers. FYI, the crystal brooches cost a lot more than the colored enamel/plastic ones.
