Ok, I’ve been looking at some different places but I’m still really at a loss for what to do for our honeymoon.
I am planning on going immediately after the wedding, so the time period would be late September/early October. If for some reason I need to postpone it (school) I would go in December or January. So really there are two times I am looking for suggestions.
- I am open to areas that are warm or moderate in climate (so nothing cold unless it happens to be a ski area). So this could be a beach or tropical destination, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be.
- I would be open to a cold location only if I can ski there (and do other things as well)
- Prefer to be outside of the US
- I wouldn’t mind an all-inclusive type spot, but I need to have things to do other than sit around on the beach/pool. We enjoy being active, hiking, history, culture, food, and exploring new things.
- I am trying to stay around a base of $5,000 (budgeting about $2K for air fare, $2K for hotel, and then $1-2K for other expenses). It’s not completely set in stone, but this is my base (so my dream New Zealand trip is probably out the window).
- I’ve already been to Maui, so I’d prefer to go some place other than Hawaii (even though I LOVE it)
- Good time to visit in either Sept/Oct or Dec/January
Here are some ideas I’ve already had: Costa Rica, Belize, Argentina, Italy, St. Lucia
Anyone else have any ideas or recommendations or comments?
Edit: I am planning on taking 2 weeks off work. I do have more time if I need an extra day or two.

@kes18: I threw in a vote for St. Lucia, but I’ve never been there. Always wanted to go though! For our honeymoon, we went to Thailand around mid september – the end of the good season (we just missed all the bad weather). It was fabulous and wasn’t too expensive at all!

I thought about Thailand! I’ve always wanted to check it out. Any recommendations on places/beaches/cities there?

My friends just took a two-week honeymoon to Costa Rica. They stayed at a beach-front hotel for one week and then moved to a hotel more in the “jungle” for the second week. They can’t stop raving about it! They said that tourism is such a big part of Costa Rica’s economy that everyone just treats you so well and works so hard to make your time there enjoyable! And theirs was a December trip. There’s a lot to do in addition to the beach, and it sounds like it was pretty affordable/would be within your budget.

I voted for Italy, because you guys sound like you’re really active and would enjoy an adventurous honeymoon over lying on the beach. Mr. W and I went to New Zealand and Australia, and we LOVED it – we get bored after a few days at the beach, so the combination of beach/city/rainforest/mountains was perfect.
Italy has all of those. It won’t be super super warm in September but warm enough that it’s comfortable. You can do the famous hike along the beautiful coast between the Cinque Terre (5 towns) – do a Google image search, it’s incredible! There is obviously tons of history, culture, and food in every part of Italy, so that will satisfy your curiosities and palatte. And there’s just so much to explore. I was interested in Thailand for our honeymoon but wasn’t sure if we wanted to go that far out of our comfort zone when we were tired after the wedding and wanting to somewhat relax. So anyways, I vote Italy – and if you’re interested in booking a trip to italy, PM me and I can give you a bunch of recs. It is super, uber romantic, great food and culture, and has some stunning scenery.

I don’t think you can do Thailand for under $5k. That’s my budget too and my wedding is 7 days after yours and we can’t decide where to honeymoon either!!! I want somewhere warm, so that rules out Europe. Costa Rica apparently has pretty bad weather in Sept/October. Belize rains a lot at that time, but I read that it’s mostly for a few hours every day and the rest of the time it’s quite nice, and it varies a lot throughout the country. St. Lucia would be really nice, but it’s pricey and it is hurricane season, though that seems to be a bit overplayed. We are leaning toward Belize or the Caribbea (St. Lucia? Turks and Caicos?). If we had an extra few thousand dollars, I’d rather go to Tahiti!!

@kes18: how much time do you have for your honeymoon? if you are flying a great distance (europe, asia), you have to consider a couple of days of downtime each way(jetlag and major time changes). if you only have a couple of weeks, i’d stay closer to home (example: a 4 hour flight).

My favorite budget/all inclusive/things to do vacation spot is the Yucatán. Each time we went it was always under 2k for flight and hotel. You can have a great time and not spend a ton.

I guess I should have put that. I am planning on 2 weeks at least. I could take off a few extra days if I needed it (I have the time)

I’ve heard good things about Costa Rica (a lot to do, and pretty cheap) so that’s good to hear!

@kes18: For your budget range, you could go down to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. It is supposed to be gorgeous and warm down there and you can get a lot more bang for your buck. But I really think it depends on what you and your Fiance are looking for in regards to your honeymoon. Whether it is tropical, cold, or European. Good luck with your search!

I think two weeks is enough time to fly anywhere. We had a 16-day honeymoon in NZ and Australia – we left the day after the wedding, and we got back the day before we had to go back to work. The first two days we were worn out, so we mostly slept and were lazy, but soon we were on our feet and doing things. You can travel to many places on $5k if you’re very careful and savvy in booking your airfare and hotels and looking for deals. I backpacked around Europe for 3 months on $6k.

For $5k and 2 weeks I would stay away from Europe. I’ve been to St. Lucia, which was awesome, although I’m not sure about spending 2 weeks there. I haven’t been to Costa Rica or Belize, but I hear they are great. I’d probably choose either one of those, and plan to go to 2 or 3 differerent places while there.

If I had more money I would go to Tahiti or Bora Bora too! Is it the rainy season in Costa Rica/Belize during the Sept/Oct? September/October seems like a little bit of a difficult time to plan honeymoons with hurricane season. I guess there is always some sort of trip insurance that might be a good idea
