@Ika: I lived in SB for 4 years… and am a California native.  I think going with more “California” type things, might be easier than SB type things (as I can’t think of anything SB is particular known for (that would fit in a bag!).  My east coast family always loves:  See’s Candy & In N Out.  There’s an In N Out about a 5 minute drive from East Beach… I’d put in a gift certificate and directions to that; directions to La SuperRica (amazing handmade tortillas); and a small box of See’s Candy!

Edit:  There’s also an AMAZING hole in the wall ice cream shop on the pier – that’s a MUST!

@oracle:I LOVE that ice cream shop!!!!

I got to SB about once a year, my grandma lives there and we always go to the ice cream shop.

There is a little diner at East Beach–you MUST try their banana panckakes. They are phenomenal.

I tried to talk my hub into doing a destination wedding in SB but he just wouldn’t go for it. I even made him take a romantical stroll at the courthouse last summer…no dice. 😛

Oh man now I’m going through SB withdrawls…..

If you have time while you are here you might want to check out Farmer’s Market for inspiration: http://www.sbfarmersmarket.org/farmers.php.  I really love the SB Pistachios.

For wine, check out grocery stores for local wines or http://carpinteriawineco.com/

If you want something they take home too, consider some coffee from SB Roasting company.

I have heard great things about Andersen’s pastries too.

@Ika: Like PP said, if you’re around on a Tuesday late afternoon/early evening, you can get goodies at the Farmer’s Market.

If guests are going to be a around for a few days, a gift certificate for coffee at French Press is good, maybe tickets to one of the museums in town (or zoo). Also, the SB Museum of Art is free on Sundays. McConnell’s ice cream is yummy, but unfortunately will melt in an Out of Town bag!
