I’ve searched countless formal dress sites looking for something non-strapless that is attractive and not grandmotherly or ill-fitting, and have had almost no luck at all. Inexpensive is a plus too. While there are cute styles that claim to be non-strapless, they are actually a strapless dress with a long sleeve bolero which would not work unless the bolero was sewn to the dress, and are false advertising.
What styles have you found that fit into this category, if any?

@Ember78: as a MOG, I was having the same problem. I found a lovely bronze taffeta that had assymetrical ruching on the front (figure flattering!) and of course the standard strapless and bolero jacket. I solved the problem by getting an extra length of material and working with the bridal shop to create a non – strapless look so I could get the extra coverage when I take off my jacket and also not feel like it was going to fall off of me! We came up with three ideas ; a wider ruched strap over the shoulders , a wider strap that cris-crossed in the back and also a halter strap that is ruched in front and attaches with a hook and eye around my neck. I went with the last halter style. It gives me just enough confidence if and when I end up taking my jacket off at the reception when Darling Husband and I dance. You could also do a portrait collar effect. It waa a perfect solution for me ; hope this helps to give you some ideas!

My mom did not want anything with thin straps, strapless, “too old,” “too young,” or “too tight.” I didn’t think we would ever find the perfect dress, but she ordered hers online from Nordstroms; it’s a navy dress with flutter sleeves and it’s really pretty. Check their website as there are a lot of classy and flattering dresses there for middle-aged women!

I found mine online @ http://www.keepmeinstitches.biz
I absolutely LOVED it!
Make sure mom gets measured professionally, and if you have any question about sizes-ask their customer service, as their dresses run VERY small!!!
They have a ton of different styles, and the prices are great!
