I don’t know if I can offer much help.. My Fiance is in his 3rd year of medical school, and I’m in my first of two years of a masters program.  We’re getting married May 2013, RIGHT after he’s done with his clinical rotations and right before I’m done with my program.  Basically, we’re getting married on a 3 day weekend, then I’ll be going back to work (as a teacher).  It’ll be crazy, but it’s the only thing that works for us since we’ll be moving in mid-June to wherever he’s doing residency!

My Future Mother-In-Law got married when she was in medical school, she just got married during winter break.  Maybe you could do something like that?  I know clinical rotations can be unpredictable in terms of actual days off during the rotation.  Good luck!

My Fiance will be starting med school next August, and I’m on the other end of the issue…as a ‘medical spouse’ I have voiced LOTS of concern about what may lie ahead.  I’m not sure if you’re asking about how easy/hard it was to plan while in med school, or what being married is like while in med school.  Obviously, as Fiance is not yet in med school and our wedding isn’t until this coming June, I can’t really advice on either…but research I have done says there are an overwhelming majority of med students who are married or get married in med school….that being said, almost all said the best time to get married was during MS1, and the worst being MS3 when rotations start…just my two cents!

Hi! I’m a med student, but we got married the spring before I started. I do have a friend, though, who got married the fall of her third year. She was allowed to take a rotation off, and they got married in that time. She made the rotation up this year (at the beginning of her 4th year) and now they are expecting a baby!

Good luck to you as you figure everything out! I am sure it will all be fine ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a medical student and I got married in the beginning of my third year. At my school we have a certain number of weeks of vacation we can take during years 3 and 4 so I  just took a few weeks off for the wedding. I would check what the vacation policy is at your school, I know some schools are much more strict regarding the 3rd year rotation schedule.

my husband’s a surgery resident now. we got engaged 3rd year of med school and married 4th year, during his vacation month.

i think 3rd year would have been more challenging than 4th, but it can be done. i was going to suggest getting advice from your school but it sounds like you already did that. we just decided there was never going to be a “perfect” time.:)

(and 3rd/4th year is a heck of a lot better than during match/ start of internship. yuck!)

I’m not in med school, but pharmacy school, so similar boat. We do our rotations pretty much the entire 4th year, so a timeline that is reasonable for us is after third year, but before 4th year gets too intense.

I would prefer a winter wedding, so over winter break is probably the best bet, so that might work for you too. Just my input, and good luck with both your program and your marriage ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m getting married the same summer as I’ll be taking my boards – between 2nd and 3rd year. My medschool doesn’t really have breaks our 3rd/clinical rotations year and I’m not waiting another year until the 4th. The summer of 2013 is going to be intense! Good luck, fellow Dr. Bees!

@elizabeth_001:  I’m married to a surgery resident too ๐Ÿ™‚ and we got married at the end of 4th year, had two weeks to move before the wedding after graduation, two weeks to honeymoon after the wedding, and then he started residency.

I’m just starting my first year of medical school and luckily we have a spring break our first year.  My fiance and I are planning a destination wedding in Florida and waiting to take our honeymoon until the first summer break.  I have been working hard to plan everything before I start school because I know I won’t have anytime to think about it once it starts!

This thread is awesome; so good to hear from those of you who are going through the same experiences. For me, it’s nice to read about and anticipate these things! Fiance and I are both writing our secondary applications, to enter med school (God willing, haha!) August 2013. By then, we will have been married about 5 months. We’ve worried about these things (married life in med school, babies, etc.) a lot, so it’s encouraging to hear from you all. ๐Ÿ™‚
