I recently adopted a puppy, I believe she is a basset hound mix. She is very vocal! not like my Chi mix she sounds like she is whining all the time for any little thing. I dont know if its whining or what. Sometimes she does it when we come home. or when we are just chilling watching TV i have read this is normal but really not normal for me. Yesterday she was laying with my Fiance (she is such a daddys girl) and i went to the liquor store with my other doggie and she was howling so bad… until i came back. i know she has some seperation anxiety because she was found either abandonded on the side of a freeway off ramp but how do i break this habbit. Or is it just their nature, I dont want to scold her i just tell her “quiet” and she stops for a while but whines sometimes.

Hey there! I adopted a Basset from a rescue about a year ago. Bassets are so vocal-it seems like mine has a different noise for everything. She tries “talking” to people and howls when she is excited about going somewhere. And yes…she whines too. It has gotten better over time, but when we got her, she had severe separation anxiety and she would whine all the time. It is just something they do though (in fact she’s doing it now for no reason!).
As for the howling, when we first got her, she would howl the entire time we’d be out of the apartment. We started crate training her, and that really worked for us. After about a month of that-the neighbors started telling us they didn’t hear her anymore! Bassets don’t have the best manners, so they need training, but they are so stubborn too. They respond well to food based training. I woudn’t be too worried about scolding her. If she has separation anxiety, I would try to get control of that so it doesn’t get worse. I would try talking to your vet or any basset hound rescues near you. I hoped this helps. Goodluck!

@LemonLolly: thanks yes she is doing alot better. She still whines and makes different noises. She even does it in her sleep LOL this was just really NEW to me. I have always had Chi’s and Rotties LOL But she is doing better her seperation anxiety is getting better. She doesn’t cry so much when we leave, but when we come home she begs for attention. I read somewhere to ignore her until she calms down then pet her.
