I am a hyphenated smith.  we are seriously considering giving our kids the hyphenated name.

My married name isn’t Smith, but it’s another one that is just as popular.  I much prefered my maiden name (which is uncommon but not unusual sounding), but I also want to have the same last name as my Darling Husband, so I just sucked it up and made my maiden name my middle name.  My first name is fairly popular amongst girls my age, so now I feel like I’m one of millions, but I don’t mind all that much.  I definitely plan on naming our children something a little different, but still traditional, ie Lorelei or Eileen for a girl, just so that they don’t have the same issue.

My husband is actually a fourth, as in Joe Bob Smith IV, so our first son (should we have one) will be the fifth.  His first name is really common as well, so should we have a son, the name will be very generic, so we will definitely be using a nickname 🙂
