Just curious who here writes for a living, even if it’s freelance, part-time and so on. What field do you write in and what projects are you working on? Do you have other things in your pocket like desktop publishing and design? How do you get started on a project/get the ball rolling/get yourself to focus?

I’m a part-time web marketing assistant. I do a long of product descriptions and marketing work.
I never really planned on this career field, but I needed a well-paying job while I’m in school. Luckily, I work for my former TA’s small business!

@tmsing: I write proposals specifically for construction projects and I’ve done some marketing copy. Trying to find work editing technical writing as there’s a demand for that where I live. A close cousin is a graphic designer so I use her if anything “extra” is required, I’m pretty fluent in Office and Adobe but just the basics in Creative Suite. I kind of made the job for myself, having worked for a construction company I transitioned into solely proposal writing for them then started my own company. I have a BA in English/Creative Writing and a diploma in Construction Management so its how I’ve made use of both. I’ve stepped back a bit lately and am working on fiction and poetry because its much more fulfilling and we’re in a financially good place right now. Its hard to focus when I have a personal project but when I have a deadline its no problem – I’m very goal oriented and if I have to be accountable to someone I get it done. I’m working on setting some time each day to force myself to write creatively but honestly things happen when the mood strikes. Writing for me is more therapeutic than about getting a certain number of words written. I find I get lonely so I also have a silly part time retail job to get me out of the house and to participate in the social world, that helps keep me on track.
Good luck to you, lemme know if you have any other questions.
