Hi there – I’m from the UK and have ordered my BErnadette dress for my wedding this December… so excited, however, has anyone had an  experience with making the V-neck a little deeper… or opening up the neckline a little more?

I’m quite busty but, if not showing much cleavage, this something comes across as looking a little ‘fat’! lol

I would appreciate any help you can give!

@klackajis:

This isn’t very helpful but I am getting married in Sept. and am planning on having the neckline opened a little so I will be sure to let you know whether or not it’s a possibility and how it goes once I get into the fitting and altering stages!

Hi, I am from australia and i am going to purchase this dress.

I loved the look of the Cathedral Mantila Veil but unfortunatly here in Australia it is very difficult to find. Do any of your wedding shops where you purchased your dress from have the veil that would match this dress??? if so could you pass on their details to me and maybe i can purchase from them and get shipped to either my friend in New York or here to australia?

Thank you so much in advance for any help.

Louise

Hi All!

I just had my first fitting of the Bernadette and we made some pretty big changes. I hope that this is helpful and I’ll try to post before and after pictures after I see it beginning of July.

I am 5’5, 120lbs. so I found the top a little overpowering for me. I also found it was hitting me a little high. So we opened the cups and did a deep sweetheart. I wanted to do this with the lace as well, but the alterations manager said that if we deepened the v with the lace too, the back would not hold and it would collapse (obviously looking weird).

I also have almost no bust so they removed the boning in the bust, put in large cups really low in the dress (so I still look like me).

We also made it more of a mermaid and pinned a lot at the knees (just the underlayers, not the lace), and I’m also wearing a fitted mermaid slip underneath to make it even more of a mermaid. Hope this is helpful!

@aprilmachelle:  I promise I will upload a photo! My second fitting is July 4th, so I’m anxiously awaiting it until then!

I got a size 2 and it fit like a glove, except around the non-existent boob area. Fit great in my waist and hips. The only minimal tweaking that was needed other than what I requested was the lace puckered so minimally on the keyhole back, so they pinned that. That was it. No hem needed, but I’m also wearing the mermaid slip and 4′ inch heels. I wanted to wear my cowboy boots, but I would have to get it hemmed for that and I don’t feel like spending more $$$.

My alterations with the lowered neckline, rental of mermaid slip and pinning the knees to be more of a mermaid was $375! Eek!

Ok so here we are after the deep v sweetheart has been integrated into the dress. I said before that they weren’t able to do it with the lace, just the built-in bust, but I was wrong. They were able to open up the lace as well.

In this pic the lace had just been pinned overtop as they were not sure if I was going to want it opened even more. But now with the cups and the deeper v I feel great! I have decided to go sans slip, as with my hips it goes into a somewhat mermaid shape anyways, and it is way more comfortable without (and cheaper might I add!)

This dress was the first one I tried on and I bought it on the spot after putting on only one other one. After countless hours of online searching, I stumbled on the Bernadette and from then on went on a four-week hunt for a local vendor who had a sample in stock.

Once I found that vendor (and there was only 1 here in Phoenix, to my surprise), I was nervous b/c everyone constantly told me to not get my hopes up b/c of how different dresses look in person…..and as much as I LOVE this dress, they were right.

Tomorrow, I go in for my 2nd fitting and am nervous b/c they’ve done a LOT of work to it. Here’s why:

-If you have wide hips and a smaller bust like me, then this dress is challenging. I’m 5’7 and a size 4 everywhere else but my hips, so they had to order a size 6…to my surprise, the size 6 fits my hips perfectly, however I’m very petite from the waist up so the top is HUGE. Lesson #1: this dress is NOT designed for women with wide hips.

-Even if I were to have it altered just to fit my size, the original shape of the front-top half is NOT flattering to a small-chested woman. In fact, the better word is “bulky.” So the seamstress is making a deeper v-neck and lowering the sweetheart neckline under the lace to take away that bulkiness.

-Because of the open back, thickness of the fabric and bulkiness up top, I highly recommend having your seamstress sew in some thick bra cups — regardless of your chest size! Otherwise, you’ll look flat. Trust me.

-I was also really really surprise by how much of a mermaid shape this dress was…personally, I think mermaid shapes are for women without hips. And b/c i have very wide hips and a small chest, I felt like the dress made me look … disproportionate.

-also, the dress is very very very thick and heavy! Great quality, but just heavy and thick, which makes the mermaid shape even more uncomfortable b/c it feels very restricting.

-soooo….the seamstress is also taking out the mermaid shape, so the fabric will instead fall naturally off my hips instead of hugging them almost down to my knees….

Hope this helps….

@Rose1012:  I have to disagree with you Rose2012- not in the fact that the bust of the dress is impossibly big (because it is and ladies you should def get cups sewn in uinless you are busty), but I also have wide hips and a small bust (41″ hips and 34″ bust) and in stalking bernadette posts over the past months I have noticed that the dress really works the best for curvier girls (particularly girls with hips and a booty). Alterations are indeed a hassle but every wedding dress will have different problems and because the bernadette is such a unique dress I would hate to dissuade girls from choosing it because there aren’t many other dresses like it. I am self consious about my hips and butt and I honestly feel that this dress compliments these “assets”.

As for the dress being heavy, it really is, but still not as bad as dresses with longer trains or more ball room bulk. It definitely isn’t the most comfortable thing in the world but I don’t think there are many dresses with the sparkle and elegant lace that the bernadette has that are any lighter!

This pic is from my first fitting before alterations.  It is definitely very heavy and quite warm in there!! But I am happy I picked this one!

When I was looking for my perfect dress, this thread really helped me a lot. I loved reading all of your comments and looking at your pics. Now, I want to give back and say that the Bernadette dress is beautiful. It was the first and only dress I tried on, and I didn’t want to take it off. There’s something about that key hole back and train that had me going crazy! Hope you enjoy the pics ! and take a look at my wedding trailer, where you can get a better idea of the dress. Hope you ladies enjoy your Bernadette as much as I did, and thanks for all the input!

Hi ladies! I am new to WeddingBee but I have been obsessing over the Bernadette threads for months! I immediately fell in love with it and last weekend I finally got to try it on! Honestly this dress is UNREAL in person and I knew it was the one as soon as it went on! Wanted to share some pics to help others who are thinking about the Bernadette! I really didnt want to take it off! Could any past bernadette brides share with me how long it took your dress to come in and what did your alterations include? Mine is the ivory over light gold!
