Hi Bees – I am on the hunt for a makeup artist in Rochester, New York for my July 2nd wedding. Anyone have any recs? Any pictures showing their work on your wedding day?
I’m stuck. I live in Los Angeles and will be getting married in Rochester (SO’s home town). I don’t know the area and am not traveling back there until a week prior to the wedding. I’m really worried. I’ve looked through some salon websites, but the work posted isnt great. Not knowing the area, I really don’t know where to look, who is considered good, and who to stay away from.

I am in the same boat. I’m getting married in Pittsford (just outside of Rochester), which is my FI’s hometown. I need hair and makeup

Artistic Designs Hair Salon – 603 Park Avenue, Rochester – (585) 244-7763…AMAZING!! Two of us had our hair done for a wedding we were in last year and it was gorgeous. I can’t remember the girls’ names, but they were adorable! Got their super early, really fun girls, very modern salon. They did a fabulous job!

Pharoahs Hairum! They have two locations – Henrietta and Fairport. They are a full service salon and everyone there is amazing at what they do. I am sure if you contact them they may be able to send you pics of thier work.

Don’t know if you’ve already booked your makeup artist, but I recommend Robyn Fazio. http://www.robynfazio.com She’s great!

Not sure if your all set or not but check out Scott Miller Salon and Spa. They have a full service salon, day spa, and makeup center. They even host makeup events all the time with company reps making sure the girls are trained in the best looks. You could book several appointments at the same time and do hair, makeup, nails, massage etc all in one spot while being treated like gold!

Thanks so much. Scott Miller was actuallly at the top of my list based on good things I’ve heard. My only hesitation with them is that their MUAs didn’t have any portfolio pictures to share with me which I thought was odd. The bridal consultant said she would hunt me down a few pictures of their work and call me back the next day. I never heard back. I called back a few times and she was never there. After leaving a few messages with no return call, I just gave up. The MUA that I was referred to wasn’t there any longer as well. I was really torn. I think if I lived in town, I would have definitely gone in for a trial and given them a shot (just based on the reviews and the modern look of their salon). However, I am flying in a few days before the wedding and just didn’t want to chance it. It also seemed like their admin was unorganized. This type-A goes into major panic mode when there are any unknowns 🙂 🙂 I have heard that they are planning a new website, so hopefully they will improve their work transparency.
I actually had this issue with a number of salons I called in Rochester and surrounding areas – so it’s not just a knock against Scott Miller. The websites aren’t the greatest and don’t show their work. When I called and asked for a few portfolio pictures to give me a sense of their work, it was like I was speaking a different language. I bet this is common to most salons, thinking about it now.
The hair and makup has definitely been the most difficult part about planning a destination wedding.
Sorry for the long-winded reply. I really appreciate the response. I just thought I’d share my experience in case anyone else was looking for a MUA.

@downtheaisle:Thanks. Robyn was in my top 2. Her portfolio looked great.
I decided to go with Joan Lincoln. http://www.joanlincoln.com/index2.php#/home/
So far, Joan has been wonderful. I’ll write up a complete review after the wedding in July. Hopefully it will help someone.
For hair, I think I am going with Rock, Paper, Scissors Salon. They were recommended by a few of my vendors. They have lots of pictures of their work online and on Facebook. They have a modern perspective and are young which is what I like most.
Hope this helps someone out there looking for hair and makeup.
Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions! I don’t know what I would do without the Bee!
