I am not having my honeymoon in SA but I did vacation in Johannesburg for three weeks about two years ago. I had to get shots and took malaria pills (because we went on a game drive near Kruger) and both my Fiance and I had zero side effects from the pills. My doctor said that most pills nowadays don’t cause bad reactions like they used to, but that a reaction was still a slight possibility. Either way, it didn’t affect anyone in my group (a group of about 12 people).

Enjoy your honeymoon!!! SA is so beautiful, and I can’t wait to go back one day.

Not going for our honeymoon, but I studied abroad in Stellenbosch for around 6 weeks. It was seriously such an amazing place! Defintely recommend Stellenbosch and Paarl for vineyards. I wish I could remember the names of all the ones we went to, but everything was 5*. I don’t drink wine so I was pretty bored haha.

I’m sure you wouldn’t want to do this one your honeymoon, but we worked in the Kayamandi Township, which was a great experience. We did weekend trips to Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain, Robben Island, all around the bay (which is a gorgeous drive), the waterfront and we saw penguins!! That was one of my favorite parts, besides the elephants and giraffes. Seriously, don’t miss the lil cuties in tux.

Then we went to Joburg for a couple of days. We toured Soweto and went to the Apartheid Museum. Both were very interesting. Didn’t really do much else in Joburg.

Then we spent a couple of days in Vic Falls. We stayed at a resort right on the river and would wake up to elephants and hippos right in front of our room. We did a booze cruise our first night and got a glimpse of some animals. Then we walked with lions and rode elephants. After that, half the group bungee jumped over the falls, but I got the bright idea to zip line, which scared the shit out of me.

After that we went to Botswana and stayed at another resort on the river. This time we did a game drive on the boat and then we did a couple of game drives on land. This was so amazing!!

Sorry I can’t help with plans, I literally just paid and everything was planned for us. I’m sure it would’ve been close to 10k if I would’ve outright paid for everything. And luckily I fly for free, so that helps a lot. I definitely plan on taking Fiance back one day because I am so in love with it!

As for the pills, I didn’t have any problems with those. About the weather, we were there in May and June, so the beginning of winter. The first half of our trip it was sunny and around 70. The last half, the sun never shined, it was a torrential downpour and it was in the 40s. Once we got up to Joburg and Vic Falls/Botswana, it was sunny and in the 70s. It was such a relief to be back in the sun lol.

Have so much fun!!

The lil cuties in tux!

grapefruit19:  We were right next to Londolozi at Leadwood! FYI, Londolozi has an app for iphone that lists animals in the area and is a sighting log!

grapefruit19:  Oh how funny!  Our wedding is August 27th, in my ideal world we’d go the following week.  Where’s your wedding, just out of curiosity?

I’m also heading to South Africa for the honeymoon. We are going in June right after our wedding. 4 nights in Cape Town, 4 nights in Sabi Sands and 4 nights of beach bumming at Benguerra Island in Mozambique. I’m also working with a travel agent (who has been awesome). I was warned that it may be rainy and chilly in June in Cape Town, but is a great time for safari ๐Ÿ™‚  So ridiculously excited ๐Ÿ™‚

Not a honeymoon, but I went to South Africa on a family holiday a few years ago, it was amazing. Lots to see in Cape Town. I will say if you are going on game drives on the safari section, a lot are early morning or late evening-take warm clothes! (I later met my now husband in Namibia and would still love to go back on safari again!)

Kannon:  Thanks for the travel agent info.  I know there is a huge range of pricing, I was looking to hear a ballpark of what anyone actually paid.  Specifically for the safari portion – this is the part I have no idea about.  Except that as I understand it, it’s typically all inclusive, with food & everything included in a package per day price, is this correct?

What an exciting honeymoon destination.  I really thought about it for us, but it just doesn’t suit my husband quite as much as me so I saved it for a ME trip, like a big birthday.  I hope you guys have a wonderful time ๐Ÿ˜Š

passthepeas:  We are at the leadwood lodge, and the normal rate is $785.  Our agent was able to get us a 15% discount though – I’m not sure if they were having some sort of special booking period.

ETA: this is also all inclusive, food, drinks, entrance fee to park, drives, etc

passthepeas:  We are staying at Lion Sands in Sabi Sands and are paying $565/person/night as an all-inclusive rate. We looked at a lot of places and so many of them look amazing! A lot of these places have “honeymoon” specials where the bride receives 50% of her rate (so 25% off)  Lion Sands gave us two nights free at their hotel in Cape Town. Hope this helps!
