To fill it up more get some garland! I had to do that also! Our tree is 6ft tall & was only 20 bucks at family dollar! We got it last year & it was pretty full then. But where its a cheap-o this year not so much. The garland def did the trick!

Instead of bows, I like to use ribbons streaming from top to bottom or like in place of a garland. Also, I really like the use of sprays in Christmas trees. Stems of silk flowers, or for a less traditional look stems of glittery twigs or those sparkly, curly sticks.
This is a crap pic, but I got these cheapies for our tree to help fill it out:

Wide decorative ribbons!
An economical (and tasty) decoration is candy canes! You could add other candies as well.

We have a cheapo 6ft prelit tree that’s a little thin in spots, mostly where the sections join together. I fill it out with fluffy garland and beads and buy large ornaments like you mentioned having. I especially like the look of clear glass ones with our multicolored lights. I think that adds a modern twist. I don’t know if you have a Kohls or a jo-ann fabrics near you, but they’re having fabulous sales on christmas ornaments right now!
