I’m a special ed teacher and I’ve had soooo many kids out this week with some sort of yucky virus. We sanitized my room today, but eww, I cringe when I think about all the yucky germs I’ve been exposed to. (This isn’t my first rodeo, I’ve worked with kids for years, but this is the first time I’ve been pregnant so it’s put a whole new spin on things.)
I’ve had a flu shot, wash my hands more than you would think was humanly possible, and make a conscious effort not to touch my face, but all this flu talk has got me freaked!
How are other pregnant bees handling this?

I am! I guess all we can do is practice good hand hygiene, get plenty of rest, vitamin c, and hope for the best!

I’m pregnant and did not get the flu shot, and I get kinda paranoid too because I work retail so I’m constantly handling people’s money and credit cards, handling product that tons of other people have handled, using the same keyboard and phone as all of my coworkers…and amazingly enough, I am the only person in my entire department who has not gotten the flu. But I use hand sanitizer constantly, wash my hands very frequently, and my co-workers are good about staying away when they’re sick since no one wants to make the pregnant girl sick.

I know exactly how you feel. I did not get the flu shot and I work as a nurse is a busy city hospital. I did get a bad cold over christmas but I’ve not gotten the flu. I make sure to wash my hands constantly. My boss was off for almost two weeks with this seasons flu, and I can’t imagine what that would have meant for me if I had gotten it. I find this years viruses and bacterias are a lot stonger and more resistant than previous years.

@Sweethart: Wow! I’m so glad you’ve managed to avoid it thus far. I had wondered a lot about pregnant nurses with all of this that I’ve seen on TV.
@Wonderstruck: Yes, retail is so yucky! I have been avoiding pleasure shopping just to try to stay as healthy as possible. Glad you’ve avoided it so far too!
I’m thinking about staying home from work Monday, I have some sort of little cold or something that hasn’t fully hit yet, but I’d rather not get fully worn down from trying to keep on going while trying to get over something. I think it’s best to get over one thing at a time!

Yup! I’m preggers and have not gotten my flu shot. I’m a social worker so I work with the public and go into their homes. Pre pregnancy I was a person that HAD to get a flu shot due to my health history (astmatic, works with the public and diabetic) I’ve been thinking about calling my doc to see if I should get one. I’m just worried because I usually get a little cold after my flu shots.

I made sure I got my flu shot early this year, and I requested one without preservative since I’m also pregnant. I work in a pediatric clinic so we are required to have our flu shots anyway, since people are MOST contagious BEFORE they have symptoms. Plus, some of our kiddos are immunosupressed so I could come into contact with someone carrying the virus and pass it on to sick children without actually becoming sick myself.

@katatatkat: I’m so sorry! I hope you recover soon! My OB told me I could have tamiflu, have you looked into that?

I work in a hospital that is currently dealing with both flu and gastro outbreaks, our emergency room got rammed over Christmas with sick people and it’s it’s findind it’s way around. I’m being very very careful to wash my hands often, sanitize in between and keep my desk/phone/keyboard and mouse cleaned. I’m praying to get through the flu season without getting really sick. I also got my flu shot so I hope that helps although I know it can mean nothing.
Remember to clean phones and computer hardware! Germs can hide there and get ya!

@MrsSawyer: I need to wipe down my laptop! I clean my phone everyday with a clorox wipe….would rather not take any chances! Best of luck to you in avoiding the yucks!
I think my kids at school have all had norovirus. I’m really hoping I have avoided it!

The best you can do is wash your hands often and try not to touch your face as well as lessen any exposure by sanitizing shopping carts and such. When i’m at work I wipe down my phone, keyboard and mouse every time.

Yes, I haven’t had the flu in ages but get a pretty bad cold a couple times a year. I’ve already had two since November, both occurred after air travel.
I’m pregnant as well and went in for an appointment earlier this week. The nurse who took my vitals asked me about the flu shot but then noticed I was sneezing and sniffling (still getting over the mild cold I got after Christmas travel). She said I should be feeling well, so I didn’t get it.

I’m not super concerned to be honest…I get everything that goes around anyway lol. I did get my flu shot at around 12 weeks prego (I’m 27 now), but I’m still just going about business as usual. As some PP’s said, just make sure that you’re washing your hands and wiping down your desk and things every now and then. The way I look at it is, can’t live in a bubble.

@MrsDTMajor: I got one that was preservative free back in the fall, that might be an option for you! Jobs where you deal with the public are so hard. In my job, I not only see students but their parents also everyday, and have had SICK parents come into my room and stand around.
