@octobermom: I do something similar. I make crochet animals (bears, dogs, cats, etc). They’re so cute and fun to make. I had never crocheted in my life until I started making them. I say go for it! You might really enjoy it.

Sorry they’re so big. I tried to make them smaller but it didn’t seem to work.

@octobermom: The ones I make are called “amigurumi.” I haven’t seen any actual kits and I’m not sure what you would need exactly for the knit ones but I would think some knitting hooks, yarn and some sort of stuffing (for crochet ones you need all that except crochet hooks instead of knitting hooks). If you get a book, they usually tell you what you need for each pattern. The book I have is called Kyuuto! Japanese Crafts!: Amigurumi though her patterns are different than normal crochet patterns. I’ve also been eyeing Amigurumi World: Seriously Cute Crochet. I think her patterns are more standard crochet. Sorry I don’t know much about knit dolls, but if you want to learn about the crochet ones, this site has tutorials to get you started and a few free patterns http://www.hookandneedles.com/patterns/ Whenever I would get stuck, I would search through Google and it would usually help me; i.e. Magic ring/circle- I didn’t know what it was so I would just Google it and saw how to actually make one.

The first few times I made them they wouldn’t come out right and I would have to pull the yarn and start all over but after a while I got the hang of it and it actually gets easier. I can now make a doll in a day. For the eyes, you can either get plastic safety eyes or just stitch them on. Hope that helps and I hope you enjoy!
