I’m not familiar with the area, but am in a similar situation, and doing a lot of comparisons between cities we will potentially be moving to. Check out http://www.bestplaces.net – you can compare cost of living in each place which will help you get a better idea of what you’re looking at. Also, http://www.salary.com is good for seeing what your earning potential could be.

I wouldn’t advocate moving without having a job in the area, but I don’t believe that’s what you’re asking.  Yes, CT has a higher cost of living, especially close to NYC.  But your husband is correct, jobs generally pay more there than in other parts of the country.

I grew up in CT, and it is a lovely state.  If you two can find jobs up there, and you both agree that it is the best next step for you, then I say go for it!

1. CT has some very nice areas, and can be more affordable than traditional NYC suburbs (Long Island, NJ, Westchester, etc). However, some areas are still very pricey. Stamford is not really a “cheap” area. I would look further north. Also, Stamford isn’t a very nice area to actually live. Lots of good companies over there though. Look at New Canaan, Norwalk, and Fairfield. Check out real estate prices in these areas.

2. Both of you should start looking for jobs in the area within the next month or so. Look at jobs in CT, Westchester, and NYC. You can commute easily to these areas from CT.

I’ve been in CT for the past 20 years. Did you have a specific question about it? I’ve lived all over 🙂

@s.renea9:  CT; and the areas in CT that you mention are pretty expensive. What kind of work does your Darling Husband do? Does he have job prospects up here? Where? If you plan to work in NYC or Westchester there may be some more affordable areas that are close by that you can live. What about Danbury CT? Its 10 minutes from NY (Putnam County) and an easy commute to Westchester. Its also a little cheaper than Norwalk. Greenwich or Westport will cost you a couple million. 😉

@s.renea9:  Yes Greenwich is lovely, if you have $20 Million for a mansion. lol. Would love to live there too haha. You really should consider further into CT. The areas you want are all going to be very pricey and are geared toward people who commute into NYC for Wall Street type jobs. Further into CT it is much more “New England”-esque with beautifl scenery and a small town vibe.

White Plains, NY is a nice area too. I know a lot of young people who live over there.
