Good night/morning! It’s 2:30 am here in the US and I am as awake as could be! Just made the 7 hour drive to the Outer Banks, NC for family vacation with DH’s family. I have a phobia of hotels and can never sleep the first night of a trip, so here we are! Lol. Can anybody recommend some sights to see/places to shop or eat? We’re in waves, near salvo. Thanks!!
(Also, any advice for overcoming my fear would be great… how the heck can I get to sleep?!)

You could drive down to the cape hatteras light house and see the graveyard of the Atlantic museum. The beach there by the museum is also nice.

Would love to see some more comments on this myself. I have always wanted to visit, since I am just in SC, but hav never made the trip.

I just thought of something else. If you and your husband would like to get away by yourselves for the day you could take the ferry to Ocracoke Island for the day.

We visited all of the lighthouses in the area and the Wright brother’s memorial.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park was cool, but be sure to take water with you if you plan to climb the huge sand dunes. We forgot the water and were pretty miserable after climbing the dunes in the heat. Also, wear sneakers because the sand is hot!
The aquarium and Elizabethan gardens were a waste of time/money for us.
We had the most fun doing a jeep tour to see the wild Mustangs. http://wildhorsetour.com

Definitely drive down to hatteras lighthouse and catch the ferry to Ocracoke!!! It’s beautiful. There is a tiny remote island called Portsmouth that you can explore on four wheelers!
Be very careful in the ocean, or better yet, don’t go in the ocean. Sharks and rip tides!
Rent a kayak and paddle around the sound.
Get a permit and have a beach fire
Buy fresh fish at Risky Business and grill it
Or, just drive up and down the island and look at the beautiful scenery. 🙂
