Santorini is a very popular (though not too crowded) romantic destination. Very beautiful place. Lots of ferries from Athens go there.

bfig2016: I love the white buildings and blue rooftops. Definitely will put this on our must-go-to list!

gemabride: I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, I’m just genuinely curious – is it safe to go to Greece right now?

ICallHimFarmBoy: Totally concerned at first too, a colleague had their honeymoon there in late September and said it was totally safe/fine – they had an amazing time!

I went to Greece this summer, and it was lovely. We loved Naxos, which is an island close to Santorini (less touristy, we took a ferry from Santorini). We went before everything started happening in Greece, but I’m not sure if it’s as good of a place to go now.

I went to Rhodes like right before the whole cant pay our bills thing came out and it was wonderful. We stayed in an all inclusive resort and it was awesome. We went to city of Rhodes, we also did an olive oil tasting and hiked up to this village that apparently where Christianity kind of started…Im not going to lie I’m not 100% on that part bc I was cold and I couldn’t hear lol. It is safe to go to the islands, they’re laid back. I heard Athens though isn’t too safe.

I love Greece, my future in laws have just got back from an island and said they had no trouble whilst they were out there. They flew into Athens and then down to the island so I think it’s safe.
I would say that in March, some areas might be a bit colder and some islands will be really windy, so maybe look at average temperatures just to check its in line with what you want. That being said, we visited an island called Thassos which is one of the more northern islands, really beautiful little island and there was plenty to keep us occupied. We stayed on the south side of the island and took a trip to the main town and into the hills. Ive also been to Ios which is again quiet and not so touristy (its really near Santorini). If you prefer a bigger island, go to Crete, there’s so much to see in Crete that you’ll probably need another visit. If it is too cold/windy (I know that was the deciding factor against us honeymooning in Greece but we’re wimps), look at Cyprus, it’s got the Greek influence but is also a bit further south (warmer).

Will be back later with more, but just wanted to say first that we were there in September and it was perfectly safe. The economic “crisis” the media says they have does not effect tourist at all. All was business as usual for us and we felt perfectly safe.

gemabride: Are you hoping for warmth and to swim? Greece doesn’t have the same climate as places that are warm year-round, and I’d be concerned about temperatures in March. I’d go in July, August, or September if I could.
Maybe this post can give you more tips: http://www.fodors.com/community/europe/late-march-in-greece-good-idea.cfm

So we went in late May of 2014. We loved it but the islands can be chilly. Santorini required long sleeves all but one day. I recommend going to Santorini because it is beautiful. We rented a car one day and drove the island, we also took a wine tour and it was amazing.
Our favorite place was Mykonos. Mostly for the hotel we stayed at. http://www.rocabella-hotel-mykonos.com/ Nothing we asked for was too much. They went above and beyond to make sure we were happy.
However, I would not go to Greece until at least May, if not later in the summer. It does get super cold and we were told on both Santorini and Mykonos that the islands more or less shut down in the winter (which includes March) as it gets rainy and cold.
If you can delay your honeymoon I would suggest it.

gemabride: I went in April with friends, which was the perfect time as it was the off-season. We stayed in Athens for a few days, and I had a blast walking around my myself and visiting museums. We took a ferry to Santorini and stayed on the southern beach of Perissa (black sands). Highly recommend renting a car (it was so so cheap) so you can drive arond the island. Watch the sun set in Ioa. Walk down to the marina and take a day trip boat that takes you to the volcano for hiking, and then swimming in a hot springs. It’s a beautiful, wonderful place.

Wow these are all amazing suggestions and recos thank you so much Bees! I’m starting to re-consider the time – maybe delaying it won’t be such a bad idea. Maybe we can spend a day or 2 in Athens and spend the rest of our time in the islands? So many options!!! Thanks again!

gemabride: We did a cruise and two of our stops were in Greece, one was Mykonos, which I don’t think was worth it unless the weather is great, and you are into the party scene. The beaches are very nice, and there’s an avid nightlife but everything is super expensive, our other stop was Athens which we really liked. And yes it is safe to go to Greece! We had no trouble whatsoever.

I loved Greece! Athens is a little bit of a hole but worth spending a day or two there to check out the ruins and museum. We went to Santorini, which is now one of my fave places on earth. spent a half day on a yacht tour that ended at Oia where we watched the famous sunset, it’s so beautiful! We also went to Mykonos which is awesome, and Ios. Ios is more of a party island for young backpackers, I never saw that part as I am always in bed by 11 haha. If you go to the islands the best thing to do is rent a quad bike and you can drive all over and see all the little towns and beaches, definitely one of the best experiences of our lives for me and Fiance ๐ I do think march is too early though, I went in late June and it was super hot in Athens and hot but pleasant on the islands. May would be perfect!
