It’s been about 10 years, but I went to Bordeaux, Marsaille, Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona.  For history and culture, I would recommend Marsaille, Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona.  I spent my time in Bordeaux doing mostly the food/wine thing so I can’t speak to the other aspects of it.

When I was in Paris (in the summer) members of the Paris symphony orchestra would bring their instruments out to the bridge behind the Louvre and have jam sessions. Locals would bring bread, snacks, and wine and listen all night. I think that was Friday nights back then, it may have changed (it was like 8 years ago). I bet if it still happens, you could find it on a travel forum. It’s a great way to have a “local” experience!

oh.. and in terms of “must dos” I really enjoyed roaming and getting lost in these especially Madrid and Marsaille.  I can’t really remember other tihngs we did aside from roaming, eating, and drinking.

Go to Toledo for sure!! Beautiful city with lots of history. Downtown/old Madrid was also wonderful, and there is this town on the Mediterranean sea called Peninscola where the anti-pope once lived so there’s even a castle. Valencia also has this zoo called Bioparc where you walk thru some exhibits like the lemers and then they have these other museums like an ocean museum and one for science and technology. They were really fun to go visit, but a bit spendy! Have fun on your trip!

ETA: Oh, yes! Barcelona! Also very cool. They have some old buldings too, like where Ferdinand and Isabella received Columbus after his voyage. And La Familia Sagrada and a park that Gaudi lived at.

It’s also been 10 years for me…but that’s just a minute in cultural history right?

I haven’t been to Spain, but I spent 2 days in Paris and 3 on the coast in Nice.

Most of the things I loved in Paris are typical must sees like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and Sacre Couer (great view of the city), the Arc de Triomphe.  But I love Impressionist art and LOVED the Musee D’Orsay and the Monet Museum.  The Monet Museum is a little more out of the way and is in a really cute community that is more residential.  Nice is gorgeous but pretty much all I did there was lay on the beach (which is rocky).

Marseille is on the meditarean as well.  It’s a smaller city with fewer tourists so you can get the feel of southern france without the crowded tourism.  It’s a walkable city and if you end up driving or going outside of the center of the city, you can see alot of cliffs and beautiful sites around the edges.  I recall feeling like it was what french life was maybe really like.

You MUST see La Sagrada Familia is Barcelona. I went in ’04 and fell in LOVE with it. Museo Picasso is on Barcelona as well. The Montserrat Monastery (about an hour north of Barcelona) is gorgeous as well. And they have some killer chocolate. Parc Guell is a park designed by Gaudi and it is lovely!

If you go to Madrid, definitely hit The Prado and the Royal Palace. Maybe a flamenco show. When I was there, we saw a bullfight. It was insane!

Definitely spend some time in Barcelona and check out the Gaudi stuff (especially the park). We also loved the Gugenhiem Bilbao. Lots of fun and interesting cities around Northern Spain!
