We’ll likely do so. Kinda want the proposal associated with our home, anyway. I mean, as long as we know it’s coming.

@lucy_smith:  My SO and I have been together for just over 6 years.. we got together when I was 18 and he was 22.. We will be buying a house before we get engaged (I’m almost 100% positive anyway). We have lived together for the past 5 years (3 years with my parents saving for a house and 2 years renting) and I am totally fine with buying a house first! I’m counting down the days/weeks/months until we are in our own home together!

Yes, we have a home and an investment property together despite not being engaged (although we do have the ring now). We have done things backwards in terms of what is traditional and what isn’t. I suppose the time was right and we knew we were comitted to each other despite not having the piece of paper.

Yep we did, we bought after 4years of being together – if you aren’t in the relationship for the long term after 4 years and need a committment before buying a house… I’m not sure that’s a cool place to be in?

I always wanted to own my own house before getting married… it’s a natural progession for me.

My husband bought this house before we started dating, but we moved into our communal home. It was necessary for us, since he is stationed in Oklahoma at Tinker AFB, and I was living in California. We needed somewhere to live, and luckily, he already had a house off base. So, we’re not the perfect situation you were talking about, but we definitely had a home before getting engaged or married. It’s nice to have a place to call our own, where we can hang stuff on the walls or get another pet.

We bought a condo together before being engaged, actually we were together for 9 months when we bought a place together.

Reason: we were both happy and feeling solid in our relationship and we were tired of paying someone elses mortgage! 7 months after buying our condo we got engaged.

My SO bought his flat before we started dating. I pay half of everything and will be on the mortgage after we marry.

We bought first, it was more of a financial decision than an emotional one-we’d been LDR and had finally gotten jobs in the same town, had saved up while LDR and the housing market was in our favour. 3 years later we’re still not engaged (this year though!) but glad we bought when we did as have paid off 10% of our mortgage already. I like that when we do get married we can just concentrate on saving for the wedding not worrying about house deposits or high repayments due to fewer savings. Having said that most of my friends seem to have used the buying a house together thing as leveredge (sp?) for getting engaged. Maybe I should have done…! Lol

@lucy_smith:  I bought a house on my own about 7 years ago when I was 24. It had nothing to do with my engagement. My Fiance and I only met last year.  However, we will live in my house after we get married then we will save for a couple of years for a bigger house with plans to rent out my home. He currently lives in an apartment.

We did. I always said I wanted to at least be engaged first, but we did it anyway. We had been together for about 9 years when we bought the house. About a year later he proposed. We decided we were sick of dumping our money on rent when we could invest in something. Housing prices in our area have really dropped in the past couple of years. At the height of the market we wouldn’t have been able to afford our house and so decided we needed to jump on the deal and good interest rates.
