My Fiance and I are going to be trying to conceive sometime after we’re married and we’re going to be using frozen donor sperm. I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to share their success story? We can’t decide if we want to have our OB/GYN do an IUI in office or try at home IUI or ICI. Any insight would be great! Including how long it took to get that BFP! Thanks in advance!

@curlymama318: I think you should definitely go to a dr to have the IUI administered. The main reason is that the sperm have to be washed to avoid infection since they’re going past the cervix. I’m not sure how far you were planning on inserting them at home, but you can’t insert semen past the cervix because you can get an infection. So they wash the sperm, and insert it past the cervix, which helps get it closer to where it needs to ultimately go. Not sure if you’re paying for donor sperm, but if you are, I would preserve my investment and have a doctor administer it. The IUI procedure itself is not very expensive, so I say maximize your chances!

@jholler25: We’ll be using sperm from a sperm bank. If we IUI at home it would be under the guidance of our OB/GYN and it would be with a sample that has been prepared (washed) specifically for IUI. If we do ICI, it would be with a sample that is specifically for ICI. We are leaning towards doing it at the doctor. Just wanted to hear about other people’s experiences. Thanks so much for your input!

@curlymama318: Good luck:) I’ve had several IUIs, not with frozen sperm but with my husband’s fresh sperm, and I would just feel nervous if I had to administer that at home. The cervix is really high around ovulation, and my RE’s nurse had trouble “getting” to it once or twice and they had to pull the RE in to do it himself, and they used a speculum and all sorts of scary tools…It only took a few minutes but there was so much involved in the way of tools that I would just be too afraid of screwing something up:)

@jholler25: Thank you so much for that insight! I hadn’t thought about it from that perspective before.

Ive had a number of IUI’s done, maybe around seven. I would recommend going to a doctor for it. The vagina is not a sterile environment, but the cervix is, meaning you could easily give yourself an infection by not handling the catheter properly. And it’s not great to get an infection in your cervix. Plus the cervix is somewhat delicate and can get easily traumatized. I’m not trying to be alarmist but I think it’s better to work with a doc if you can afford it. Good luck you!
