Fi and I are contemplating the idea of not bothering with a dj and disco – all the ones we’ve ever been too have been far too loud for a family gathering where people want to chat as well as dance and the dj’s always talk over songs and mumble into the mics. So anyway, we were thinking of possibly doing a songlist on his ipod composed of our guests favourite songs to dance to and playing it thru an amp and speakers that we have. This would also mean we would have more money to spend on hiring disco and mood lighting.
Is this a daft idea? are any of you other bees considering doing a disco without the dj?

I don’t know if my venue has an ipod connection or if I can figure out how to rig one up, so I think I’m going to make an MP3 CD actually. I’ll make a back up and then I can have like 60 songs in exactly the order I want and exactly the songs I want.
I never really understood the point of the DJ, especially when they can be so annoying and the music is out of your control.

thank you. i agree entirely. how can you trust someone you dont know to keep your guests happy all evening. i just can’t help feeling like people may end up sniggering at us, but then who cares, its our wedding.

My fiance and I are doing that, and we went to a wedding several years ago where the couple played their own music with speakers and a computer playlist. It seemed to work well for them; they designated the maid of honor to make sure nobody screwed with their playlist 🙂

I voted “would possibly do it” because we considered it (for financial reasons). In the end though, we worked with a DJ who was willing to negotiate with us on price and included all the lighting we needed for free!

We did an ipod wedding. It worked perfectly.
