I’m just wondering who is doing their own hair or having a family member do it for the wedding, instead of having a professional hairstylist do it???
I’m asking this because I’m contemplating doing just that… My wedding isn’t until September, but I had my hair stylist do a trial run with my hair yesterday and, UGH!, did I not like it! At first I thought it looked OK, but then when I got home and looked at it more, I did not feel pretty! It wasn’t what I want at all. …I don’t feel like spending $85 a pop to have him keep trying to get it right. I showed him a ton of pictures of exactly what I want before he started on my hair, but I guess it just didn’t compute. I’m thinking of having my mom just do my hair – the style isn’t that complicated, but it makes me kind of nervous to put my hair in the hands of a non-professional. We’ve got enough time to work on it and she seems to understand exactly what I want, but what if it doesn’t work out??? Argh!!

@thekj: Have your mom do a “trial run” as well. If you find you’re not confident nor do you like it, find another professional. I plan to have a family member do mine, but she owns her own salon.

My reason for wanting to do my own hair is different than yours (I have difficult hair that many stylists cannot handle, I have left a hair salon crying once..) but I know people will gasp at the idea of me doing my own (in my normal everyday style)
I think with the beautiful dress, jewelry, veil, etc.. I don’t need fancy hair. I just don’t want to hear people’s judgements :

I’m totally doing my own hair…I have never had anyone do my hair that I’ve actually liked it…it’s not that I’m uber picky but it either tends to be too ‘fluffy’ for me or too plain. Plus for $85 I’d rather have an hour massage the day of then spend 1 1/2 hours get my hair messed with (which I know I’ll just go fix it after it’s done). I do know there are plenty of gals who get their hair done and it looks AMAZING…and for them it would be worth the moula. Me…not so much.
P.S. My BM’s are all totally falbergasted that I’m not getting my hair done…hahahaha!

I was going to do my own (I did my own for prom my senior year and planned a similar style — a wavy side ponytail) but then a friend offered to do it for me. I mainly chose that route because of cost. I was pleased with it (though would have loved to have an updo)

I’m doing my own. I plan on doing at least 2 trials sometime in the last couple months leading up….

I’m definitely doing my own makeup. I can’t stand other people doing it, I always freak out. Lol. But I’m really considering havign a family member or a professional do my hair. Not sure though…

I’m probably going to do mine. I never like how it looks when I come out of the salon, and don’t like having lots of product in it. I want quite a simple ‘do anyway (loose curls, pinned back at the front) so am confident I can do it 🙂

I’ve ALWAYS done my own hair for events, so I’m super scared to have mine done by someone else for the wedding. I was planning to do my own still, but I won a gift certificate for a special occassion updo, so I’m going to give it a try. I’m so scared, though!
The thing is, I KNOW that I am capable of doing my own hair how I want it…but it would be nice to have someone else do something that I might not have thought about doing. So I’m stuck in this dilemma also. I’m still considering giving the certificate to my Maid/Matron of Honor or something.
I think you should try doing it yourself, do a few test runs, and if you think it’ll take too long for you to do it or are even a LITTLE uncomfortable, then have your mom do a test run or two.
