anonynonynony:  I was planning to write out DH’s and my story of cutting off his parents as I’ve done many times on the boards, but it sounds just like kcoast’s. DH’s parents are not horrible people, but they haven’t been good at parenting teen/adult children and recognizing that their children are individuals with their own opinions and life plans. They don’t want their children to grow up and take responsibility for their own lives (simple things like bills, schooling decisions, etc.) because it’s an element of control for them, so it came as a huge shock when DH wanted to handle these things himself in his 20s and they could no longer hold them over his head. SIL is completely dependent on the parents still so doesn’t have much incentive to keep in touch with us.

When we told Mother-In-Law that we no longer wanted to have a relationship, shit totally hit the fan haha. We have her mostly blocked on social media, emails, phones, so she decided to send us physical letters instead with bible verses threatening death to children who do not honor their parents (and all the hilarious variations of ravens plucking your eyes out, etc.).

We are definitely happier after the split. Every communication from his parents brought with it endless stress and unnecessary drama. It makes me really sad that they can’t be a part of our life, because Mother-In-Law is generally a really fun person and we have a ton in common (personality-wise), but at least for now, it is good to show them that we won’t put up with the crap just because they think we owe them for something.
